Yes. That's theft. See: USA.

No. That's fine. See: Denmark.

Should be noted that Danes pay a pretty high tax as well. They are also (and have been for a while) the literal happiest country in the world. There's a mindset in Denmark that if you fall, your fellow countryman will help you to your feet. As you would for him.

The reason we hate paying taxes is we are paying for something and getting nothing in return, or worse, we are paying for something we actively don't support. Normally when you pay for something you get something in return, like buying a car. Why would anybody want to pay THOUSANDS for something every year only to get nothing, or worse than nothing? Of course people hate taxation.
