>Remote work is bullshit. She was right to cut that

It can work perfectly fine in a company as large as Yahoo. Regardless, she handled it very poorly. Remote working had been a part of yahoo for much longer than her and many employees were accustomed to having that option. It could have been phased out gradually or made less appealing rather than in the demonstrative fashion she did.

But she handled it the way she did for the sake of vanity - she did it to give shareholders the impression that she was making drastic changes to turn the company around and to brand herself as a strong leader. And that is the worst kind of public company CEO - one who does what looks good to keep her job, rather than actually doing what's right int he long term, even though it may not be popular among shareholders.

>It can work perfectly fine in a company as large as Yahoo
the exact opposite
in large companies it was proven that productivity of work at home is less than 30% of office work,
it's actually in small tight-nit companies that people have such a sense of responsibility that they actually maintain productivity at home worm
you are right about how she did it though. that was a wrong implementation but i think it was intentional to ignite resentment.

lol someone's never worked technology.

"remote work" is just code for "24-hour on-call".

Google gives its employees their choice of laptop and cell phone, then puts all their apps on them and surreptitiously tracks utilization; they remove as many barriers as they can to work, so it becomes hard to just walk away and do your own thing.

Thinking that working remotely is somehow a reprieve from company culture or employee obligations is incredibly dim-witted.

I know that for me personally, I work way more diligently when I'm at home because I'm more accountable for my time. If I'm in the office all day, my boss walks by & knows I'm there, researching/writing/working on projects. When I'm at home, the assumption is I'm doing fuck-all unless I report my progress periodically, simply because that's how the stigma works in most offices.

I'm not complaining about that concept either; I'm just saying that the reason remote work is actually successful is because accountable employees (aka diligent people) work harder when remote to attempt to counteract the stereotype that remoting in is for people who don't actually intend to work that day.

I think it would work fine if there really was accountability for time. I doubt that Yahoo had any sort of reasonable system for that. There's no way any CEO would just get rid of remote work without actually investigating its impact on productivity in the company.

The Co-founder of Yahoo left the company completely in 2012. Is it because he has an incredible foresight and can predict what will happen to Yahoo 4 years into the future? Did he realize that Yahoo is a sinking ship that's impossible to save as early as 2012?
