I posted earlier today about how my company reimburses up to $360 a year for gym fees, but my reimbursement was taxed. I just got my response from HR today that the reimbursement is, in fact taxed.

What the fuck kind of sense does that make? I pay $500 in gym fees this year, my company will reimburse up to $90 a quarter, $360 for the year... And then the $360 they reimburse me gets taxed at 35 fucking percent.

I legit got $200 back from my $360 gym reimbursement, but the money I used to pay for the gym was already taxed at 35 percent from my income.

Jesus fucking Christ this is theft.

You're not supposed to get taxed on a reimbursement. Your company is probably accounting for it as a "wellness credit". Those do flow through your earned income. They probably do this to lower their group health care insurance expense as many group policies now have discounts for offering wellness programs.

tl;dr it's just the accounting. If you submitted travel expenses, those would not be taxed.

You're correct. It's a "wellness credit". I received $12k in travel expenses this year and they were tax free. I still feel like I'm being cheated out of $130 or so.

True. Hopefully you're saving $130 a year on your health care insurance premiums though since your employer if offering a wellness program. Tbh you're probably actually saving more than $130 per year because of the discount.

It's a taxable benefit for you but a deductible expense for your employer. Yeah, sucks but those billions/trillions in debt need to be paid back.
