The Romans only carried out the order. The Romans were also famous for letting the religious customs in the lands they conquered to stay the same, as long they didn't interfere with the Roman Empire.

It sounds more absurd because you've over-simplified things.

You can't ignore for example that the kike alone dying (if he died at all) only became relevant because of written accounts of this, and that before those written accounts existed - the Old Testament scriptures were a major component in the success of Hellenic Judaism. So basically - the written components of this were a factor in Christianity's success. You can't ignore also the various aspects of the religion which made it beneficial and useful to certain groups of people - I'd argue that many certain types of ruler benefited from the success of Christianity, and many women benefited from the 'disposable male' aspect of the religion - and many men bought into the repression of sexuality, false male self-esteem promised by the religion.

Then on the other end you're ignoring the evolution of those holidays and the general trend towards materialism being a steady progress, so even though we live in 'secular' societies for the most part, people still cling to those symbols and rituals for various reasons (Christmas can be fun, especially for families, and families drive consumerism).
