The only thing that are legitimate risks in my account are TQQQ, SPXL, and LCI.
And I didn't even actually invest heavily in those.
I think it's mostly just because my OGE went down, either that or BAC and C.
I'm gonna hold this recession, but I'm really wondering whether holding onto BAC and C is smart.

The one saving grace of this is that I have a chunk of cash coming in from a pension plan I had with a former employer. I will be able to buy the bottom with something more than the ashes that are my portfolio.

Worst two days of the whole year for me, today and yesterday. I'm back to July levels now. Whole August bull run wiped away.

I've had a look at the charts just now and think the following are probably most likely to see short term upside. Canopy Growth, TerrAscend, Canntrust, and Curaleaf. Also CRON but be very careful about that one. chronos group is up because they are rumored -not confirmed- to be a buy out target by Altria. Talks have allegedly happened, no deal in place yet. If the rumor turns out to be false or the deal in progress falls through, cron will nosedive.

Most risky is Curaleaf as it is a newly public company and does not have enough trading history to build an actual low support other than the pre-IPO prices, of which it is currently trading below. Well if that's your situation day trading is an especially bad idea, it's an incredibly unstable kind of life and it probably wouldn't mix well with married life at your age. You want mid-term investing over the course of several years, with most of your money in mutual funds so you're dealing with less risk.

Right now, especially with the yield curve close to inversion, it's best to just put your money in safe places so you can invest in stocks once the market's crashed and prices have gone down. That means bond heavy mutual funds, T-Bonds, high yield savings (at least 2% at this point) and maybe CDs. These things will allow you to keep pace with inflation so you don't loose value.

Once you find a job, figure out your expenses and then budget in a certain amount you will invest and save. No matter what, make sure you have some cash on hand in savings, at least several months worths of expenses, in case of an emergency. After you've got that buffer, put the rest towards your investment portfolio as you get each paycheck.

Once the market crashes relocate your money from bonds towards stocks, especially bluechips. Look for equity based mutual funds, index funds, and etfs in sectors you think will do well. Once you've got that money there, just wait and hold until you get enough for you to reach your goal.

Options were originally invented as a risk hedging tool. As a new investor, one really good use for a put option is when you are shifting into a sizable position and you want to make sure you buy in at the bottom. Say you buy 2k in XYZ at some price you think is the bottom, then you buy a $100 put option on top of that. Indices like SPY are usually more liquid than the stocks it comprises of (not always, but generally) and ideally carry less risk because you're exposed to a broader market. That's why you'll hear people tell new investors to just throw money in an index, you can more or less forget about it. Derivatives are just 'cause we can. You can put a derivative on anything. Heck, they even have derivatives on volatility indices and you can't even trade those because they're not even assets lmao.

Just to add; we I do TA on an index like the S&P it's not because I'm trading it directly. When the big indices break bearish you can expect the majority of stocks (even "recession proof" stocks) to follow for at least a while. A long enough while to trash your portfolio if you don't sell.
