When you're in a creative profession or working in a start up not wearing a suit is a statement supposed to show off how your skills transcend needing to present yourself "correctly" in a suit.

So yeah, I can see how you'd get taken more seriously by dressing scruffily in a creative profession but you can't avoid the fact you're getting judged as much on your choice of dress as the guy in the suit, and arguably are as restricted in what you wear because of it.
