Angel Tip of the Day: Consider the billion-dollar business. What are some of their shared characteristics? How did they become so successful, so large, and make so much money? I believe that thinking about these questions can help you think about how to start a small business using principles that lead to increasing scale and profits. The internet is your best bet, in my view, but don't take that as an absolute. Also, note that a fucking ice cream business can make millions under certain conditions, while an unsuccessful "diamond" or "luxury clothing" business could tank. Try to think big while also taking it easy on yourself by not trying to reinvent the wheel. Good luck. I hope this at least provokes some thought.

Be right there tomorrow. I feel like all the low-cost entry options are just taking a skill and applying it in a niche. I guess there's grind-heavy stuff too, I had a coworker who was constantly lurking OfferUp for PCs and parts, taking the best deals, and reselling whatever he didn't wanna keep. Sometimes he'd find a small business or contractor closing shop or upgrading everything, so they're selling shit just to recoup a bit of cost while getting rid of it asap, and on top of that he'd typically haggle them down by offering to take most or all of the shit. Might be viable to get your escape-egg a bit bigger.

Well it was a chill job until the new boss came. He does no work and puts it on others, then reports them for not cleaning their floors when they are running around doin other shit.
>get a call about a mountian of cardboard blocking pickup of trash compactor
>have to move it like quick
>call for help on radio, no one answers
>boss ignores me but he's there
>move it all by myself (not my job)
>go to report him, third time cleaning it up
>multiple employees whose job it is to clean up trash ignored it for 2 days
>boss finds out I'm reporting him
>tries to stop me from telling management
>show management and try to finish my shift
>says if I try and finish shift he will call security on me
>get suspended
>no one from the company ever contacts me about length of suspension
>call and email HR and the big boss multiple times, no reply
>get fired for "harassment and abusive behavior" instead of insubordination
>jews me out of a week's worth of pay
>never called him a name or got in his face or anything just got upset and explained the situation to mall management
>basically they ruined my good reputation never ever had a problem with anyone in the 10 yrs I've been working.

3 days spent not working on anything. Normally I'd feel really terrible. But I've been listening to this audiobook. The dude reading is super cringy, but the message is pretty solid. I think I've found a book that is seriously addressing one of my major flaws as an operating human.

Two things he's said so far.
Stop letting yourself get stuck in personal feedback loops. That is, those moments when you're screaming at yourself "why the hell would i say/do that!?"

And. Stealing the quote for this one.
>“The desire for more positive experience is itself a negative experience. And, paradoxically, the acceptance of one’s negative experience is itself a positive experience. (p.9)”
Wishing you had a great life. Like Chad having a great life on Instagram. Agonizing over it, gives you horrible stress.(negative.) Acknowledging being a wagecuck with mountains of student loan debt and having a bleak outlook about the future.(positive...?)

Well the book explained it better :) I'll get my ass back in gear now.

>> No.11788758

>>11788738
mm yea i can say the latter is definitely a positive. I didn't really start getting my shit together as an adult until I started keeping personal finances like I was a business entity, and just seeing how all sorts of my life were being fucked over. There's no worse feeling than organizing all of your accounts and seeing the massive debt you've nonchalantly pile-drive'd yourself into. Partly the reason I became an accountant, so I can help others avoid the mistakes I made.

As great as audiobooks are (and i use them a lot more often than i read), you really suffer by not having a physical book that you can refer to and refresh your memory. So unless you plan on listening to it multiple times, my suggestion is to do what i do and summarise the most important aspects of the book and print it out (can usually fit them all on one A4 page).
I find that if i don't do this, the more i consume the more i forget the particulars of each book/chapter I've listened to.

Ant-thesis:

Internet helped to sustain two-tailed products.

Tail 1: Few massive sized/scaled companies powered by VC/PE money

Tail 2: Lots of small companies focusing on niche. So called "long tail" (power law).

Focus long-tails as focusing on Tail-1 ideas will break/burn you mentally and physically.

Hey guys I've been wavering with my idea to start a business. The wall I'm hitting right now is market research. To find out if people actually want this thing.

So far there around 4 new start-ups in America and Europe that sell this thing. I currently live in Asia and see a potential for this thing, but my language skills here are shit. I have some secondary market research, like how many potential users there are according to recorded population statistics, but that doesn't even cover age or sex. I need to get into the nitty gritty and talk straight to my customers. So far I've been getting my customers to follow me on instagram (just a personal account now).

What can I ask the other start ups? Is it ok if I ask them about their market research? I hate the idea of doing primary market research.

I'M AN ENTP, I CANT BE FUCKED WITH THIS WHEN MY MIND IS THINKING OF DIFFERENT IDEAS A SECOND

To add, I have a partner who speaks the language and knows a whole lot about mass manufacturing and has a lot of contacts, but he hardly understands me or replies to me. At our last meeting he was super hyped but i couldn't tell if that was just because he was an old drunk business man or what. I guess I should send another email.

>> No.11797147

didn't want to waste a thread on this and couldn't find a better one in which to ask:

i'm sure the answer is obvious to /biz/ users but are there any circumstances whereby a company would interview a candidate for a position knowing they weren't going to hire them? like are there motivations/pressures for certain companies to interview a certain number of people or people of varied backgrounds

My background is I wanted to be an illustrator. I had 8 years to figure it out and wasn't able to. Now, I want to make an AM site or build a brand out of it. Being an artist took a tremendous toll on my mental wellbeing. Unable to finish shit, means no portfolio, means no work.

Not saying AM is any easier. However, what attracts me to it is the way marketers use various tools in psychology, writing, even art, to sell. I feel like this could be a roundabout way to push myself back into art, if I have a higher purpose for it. But even if not, I think I could find peace with just having an internet brand.

I'm struggling with content writing right now. I'm not feeling my niche.
