How come BTC is still #1? I don’t get what’s so exciting about digital gold. the real value of DLT is in getting rid of the middleman and making your data infrastructure more secure. Companies want to adopt that kind of technology since it will cut costs. Why is anybody still interested in entering an pyramid scheme that needs more electricity to run than a small country. Also gold market cap is around 7trillion while stocks are worth 70trillion.

>gold market cap is around 7trillion while stocks are worth 70trillion
That's because the stock market has multiple leveraged gold ETFs.

The
>digital gold
or
>store of value
slogan is a meme. Nakamotos whitepaper is titled
>Bitcoin: A peer-to-peer electronic cash system
and his innovation was to have potentially adversary nodes find consensus (a problem form before the 70's) using proof-of-work (an innovation from the 90's) using a simple Merkle tree data structure (a "block chain", an idea from the 70's) and use it to execute smart contracts (an idea from the 90's, except they soon took away Turing completeness, which Vitalik didn't like and so he forked). tl;dr the proof-of-work-for-consensus part was the novelty and it turned out a few years in that it wouldn't scale. That's the end of a decentralized bitcoin and that was 4 years ago at least. But this lead to a boom in DLT research and projects and that's where we are now.
The new-rich hodlers are still sitting on bitcoin, though, and bitcoins price sentiment controls the funds of all other projects.
On a global scale, if you want decentralization, technologically the space will go in a DAG direction, but it will all be branded as developments building on le bitcoin.

It's the trading pair for all of the leveraged derivatives (altcoins), any other answer is incorrect.
Think Petro dollar for a fiat equivalent, the value is derived from the speculation on a larger crypto sphere.

So fiat gateways will make it redundant? Or at least drop it back a few pegs

You clearly don't understand the value of security in private decentralised internet monies.

Difficult subject as fiat pairs need to not only be real fiat and not some digital paper peg like tether, but also will be regulated by banking institutions and government entities . In the crypto market this is not desirable . Not being able to cash out is not a meme, paying your taxes and proving the origin of crypto to make fiat based trades is no easy task for early adopters .
In the world of finance your money is guilty until proven innocent , so there is not the kind of demand for a new fiat based pair. The goal is to use all of this as an actual currency.

A fundemental shift to a new trading pair will be a long drawn out process as everyone currently has picked BTC to trade in and habits and values tend to be generational , so unless OG whales leave the market or there is some extinction level event, BTC is good enough as all the transaction volume happens in high throughput databases on exchanges, not on chain.

I on the ther hand don't get what's so exciting about your DLT and cutting some kike companies costs. I give 0 fucks about blockchain beyond money because I'll never need any of this shit, if some schlomo can save a few bucks a year thanks to using blockchain how is that exciting to me? I'm only excited about things I can benefit from like btc or monero. Decentralized immutable deflationary (btc) money I hold link but only for the money, I couldn't give less o a fuck about smart contracts or ethereum
