Except what weirds me out about that company is that they have been in operation for years. They've been on the books since at least 2011 when they were trading at $50 a share. They sank all the way down to their current state. They met earnings expectations a few quarters ago,and now they're burning up all the cash again. How is this a small-cap biotech poised to make it in the long run when clearly its also clearly company with a history of losing value and poor fund management? The fact they also have other appeals is great but I see nothing but growth in PC market. Small things like DRAM price drops etc help too. Streamers are mainly PC and we are still late in console life span so they suck ass till the next refresh too.

I recently switched to M1 finance from Robinhood. I'm actually really liking it, I can adjust the ratios and buy partial shares of stocks so the percentages don't go above or below certain amounts, and I can set up an atuomatically weekly or monthly deposit equal to 15% of my paycheck.

Why are you using Robinhood instead of M1, /smg/?

Sidebar: Is GE a decent buy? I'm liking this Larry Culp guy, thinking of waiting for GE to bottom out more before investing in them while shares are cheap.

The appeal was that M1 is less for day-trading and more for long-term investing, which is my goal. It's nice to be able to buy a fraction of each of the shares I hold to maintain the right percentages, instead of waiting a prolonged period of time till I can afford the more expensive shares and PRAY that by the time I can they aren't already overvalued, then mess with the ratios.

Being able to set up the portfolio and just forget about it is really nice. Checking daily drives me insane. Of course, I do keep up with the news about the market. M1 has a lot more resources for researching individual stocks, and also has options to set up an IRA or Roth IRA.

In accordance with long term dude weed strategy, I have begun opening positions in US companies. First step to that is an arms length investment in Quinsam Capital Corp, a Canadian investment firm that has a considerable position in Acreage Holdings bought at the low pre-IPO prices. As Quinsam is an investment firm rather than an ETF, they trade their positions, take profit, and cut losers as needed. I believe this will allow me to profit off Acreage's market debut without directly participating in the opening madness that is sure to occur.

No other changes to portfolio at this time. I hold WEED/CGC, RIV, and Quinsam now for the dude weed related stuff.

GE will never be immensely profitable, but I can see Culp raising it to 20-30 over time. The fact that so much of his pay as CEO is tied to company share value is encouraging. He also had the balls to cut dividends short-term to fix the company in the long-term. That's a bold move.

It will definitely take longer than most on /smg/ are willing to wait for a turnaround, though. Minimum of two years before there's significant growth upward. The fact that it's so unpopular means the price will probably stay low for a while.

Undecided on whether to buy at the moment.

Honestly I dont think the subscriptions are indicative of future success or failures. The bigger problem is that their model of licensing shows/movies, creating originals, and more wont be sustainable in the long run as the content producers move on to either building their own streaming platforms like Disney, or exclusively licensing content to streaming services they pretty much own already or have a huge amount of shares in like Hulu. Netflix's catalog is going to get worse over time with the exception of their original content and the price for producing shit like Bright is going to require raising subscription costs year after year to stay profitable. And shit will get worse with comedy specials if issues regarding pay differences for comedians starts to bubble up again (imagine the Dave Chappelle vs Amy Schumer vs Monique bullshit, but this time its a full blown SJW act like Nanette doing it and actually going on a Twitter crusade). I think the other things are going to matter once costs of operating eventually starts to exceed what they're charging for subscriptions. From there its a race to see whether Netflix breaks and makes inferior original content to cut costs, or if their userbase is so loyal and their original content gets so damn good that subscribers would be willing to pay nearly as much or more for Netflix than cable on a monthly basis while not having access to a large library of media including Disney, Fox, and Times Warner content. The way AI is implemented right now (neural networks) is non-deterministic and prone to randomness/tail risk. One day the cars could mow down 50 people, and it would be the end. Society isn't autistic enough yet to allow machines to kill a single human.

That's assuming it ever even gets that good.

The AI meme is basically a pump and dump scam (in the long term). They will spin it as the recession preventing them from getting capital to fund R&D. This is true. Examine the history of AI and neural networks. There's a wave of memes that seem like they're going to take over the world every 30 years. Then it dies. Then the real research happens (but no one calls it AI). The real research becomes too tough. Someone rediscovered neural networks but adds a trick to them. Then the cycle repeats.

The trick they discovered was deep learning, but before it was discovered, it was impossible because of poorer hardware previous to its discovery. Hardware got better around 2006 (specifically NVIDIA GPUs) and started the hype again. So hardware, not massive innovations in theory or software, created this modern AI frenzy. Hardware isn't growing in capability commensurate with the growth of AI hype. It's not like some genius made a major breakthrough that changed everything--neural networks have been around for like 50 years. The end of this meme is in sight.

IMO, best case scenario is after the collective trillions of R&D, Google/Facebook/Amazon/Tesla come out with machines to do things like automated burger flipping or fruit picking. That's the limit of the near-future technology. Still profitable (they won't go under), but nowhere near the expectations that are currently priced in.

The NYC subway system, among many others in the US, is already like that. It's a lot easier to move something in one direction on a track through a tunnel; fewer things can potentially go wrong. Automated trains date back to the 1960s.

While you're absolutely correct that theory largely hasn't seen innovation and people are exploiting hardware advances, automated driving is really not more difficult than automated berry picking or burger flipping in the right environment. Its not ridiculous to assume that we'll see automated cars in a limited capacity on highways and other non-pedestrian well-lit roads in addition to laws that forbid their use in residential areas and the like. These things roll around in controlled environments just fine all the time.

It's really laughable that the expectation was set at self-driving cars right off the bat, before doing simple things like replacing burger flipping. It's such a pie in the sky fantasy.
