All in all it's only a couple hundred dollars lost here but I feel guilty for not adequately protecting my charges.

I wish this guy had struck a month earlier. So much wasted feed/time.

If anyone is interested in the business side of this...
You can build a chicken-tractor for like $150 + $45ish for feeder/waterer. A 12'x10' pen can hold up to 75 birds (but you will want to start at around 50 unless you have very fertile soil...too much manure will nuke the ground and make it harder for grass to regrow). Each bird costs about $1.50 as day old chicks. You brood them inside on wood shavings for 2-3 weeks.
Then you move them outside to the tractor and move it to fresh grass each day and twice a day for the last 2-3 weeks. It takes about 8 weeks for them to grow to full size. During the outdoors phase, you are using about $40 of feed per week (you can get lower prices and better quality if you bulk order and mix it yourself). It takes maybe 20 minutes a day of maintenece per tractor (if you do them in bulk) between moving the tractor, topping off water and feed (x3 a day).

So the marginal cost per bird is about $8. Let's say certified slaughter is $8...so $16 total. You can sell these pastured birds at 5lbs for $30-$40 so we are looking at a profit margin in the neighborhood of $15 a bird.

So a bare bones investment of around $650 can return $1500... giving you $850 to figure in labor and marketing (both of which scale well).

This is very interesting. I am looking at a PDF right now with info about rearing chicken in SEA. Here they say that "local" chicken take about 6 months to grow to harvest. There are "three breed crossings" that take 3 months, and "broilers" that take about 8 weeks. Would these cornish ones be regarded as broilers? I guess growing 'em in SEA is a different game altogether.

>> No.11527761

>>11527716
broiler is just a common term for a meat bird breed.
Cornish Cross is the fastest growing meat bird available, but they are dumb and don't scavenge or play and exercise as much as other breeds. The trade of is quality of meat vs cost of raising/turnover.

If you are raising pastured poultry (fresh grass and sunshine every day) you are already leagues ahead of "organic" or "cagefree" so raising an even higher quality bird is overkill when you look at your profit margin.

Thanks.

Looking at the traditional way of doing it here in SEA now. They put them in tiny wicker baskets, instead of your type of chicken tractor, and have about 3-5 in each basket. I assume they need a lot of feed because the land is pretty arid. the baskets are very tightly woven indeed, which works both as sunshade and protection against snakes (I think).

Anyway. This is all interesting stuff.

Hardware cloth is what you need. Don’t listen to the retards spouting chain link. A coon or fox will find their way through chain link. Hardware cloth is strong and the holes in the wire are to small for predators to get their paws into to tear it up.
