According to the government's website, you are only taxed 50% of your gains. Then, depending on your income bracket rate, you are taxed on that 50%.
So if you're a neet with 12k of income, you are taxed 0% of all capital gains, right? Am I reading this correctly? Seems too good to be true.

Correct. 50% of your NET gains count as income and are subject to taxation, the rest don't. This only applies to your trading account though, not your TFSA. If you fall below the lowest income bracket, you won't be taxed on that income then. Moreover, losses can be written off to lower your tax obligation too.

HOWEVER, if you want to pay no tax at all, ever, use your TFSA to trade. Yes it has a contribution limit but you keep everything.
