candy corn edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

By dependable, I mean companies that you can say with a significant degree of certainty that they will become leaders in their areas.

All of the following only applies to dependable companies for safe investments. Keep that in mind and remember it.
>how to see bear market or dip
I have a lot to say on this subject. To boil it down: if most your stocks are red WITH SPY and DOW Jones down a lot more than average one day, this is strike one for bear market, if they’re all down greater than 1% on average that’s strike two for bear market, if the next five days they continue to stay down on average then raise later and a week or two later they begin this same falling pattern over the course of a week that’s strike three and I would say that’s a sign that we’re entering a bear market. That’s not happening right now paricularly. But it appears we maybe gettin got something similar to that.

>To identify a dip:
the difference is this generally happens with one stock or a few dependable stocks just going down for two or three days in a row, without the SPY or DOW Jones being impacted (though it might be down a little bit depending on the stock; Apple will drag SPY up or down). Find a stock that you wanna buy when it will eventually dip, then plan on the conditions that you will buy the stock on. You look at how it’s been averaging the past three months also compare that to year, count how many days it was down in the past month or three months (and how long that downward trend lasted). This is supposed to be a dependable stock, so it should have more of an up trend anyways. Then when it goes down for *no reason*—that’s when you buy (I like doing so at the end of the trading day or if it’s down 2.50% on a non-volatile stock). Expect it to go down a little the next day too, if it shoots up at opening just sell it for a profit of at least 1%. If you didn’t reach that, hold until you do.

Need to make a part two to finish responding.

This is horribly rushed and condensed, but hopefully you get the point. Also for the dip part, I want to make it clear you can buy at any point in the red so long as you are fairly certain that the stock will continue to follow its average trend line. It could be for 0.30% right before closing, and that would be a good buy before the market closes depending on the stock, how it’s average has been going, and so long as there was *no particular reason* for the dip.
Sometimes a stock will dip just becuase a company similar to it received bad news. That’s also something to consider.
Just thought I would clarify the using in the dip part though.

I have reason for the stocks I’ve listed, yes. Apple would be a good one to get into towards the bottom of a crash because Apple has something special that many companies don’t. They have no debt at all.
It would still be effected by a falling market, but I suspect it would recover quicker. Not to mention they’ve been very quiet on their development of electric cars. I’m thinking by Christmas they’ll release some word on it. Their self-driving semi-trucks will be a major development too if they can get it right. They’re stock would go up for sure. But that’s years down the line.

Shopify is an industry disruptor, people can create their own stores and they get a profit. Pretty safe for now and they’re reinvesting almost all their profits back into the company for growth. I can only see it getting better.

WIX is a drag and drop website development tool for boomers who want to have a nice John Deere fan website or a wanna be YouTuber who wants to look professional. It will continue to do well, not sure if it’s much better than word press though, but it’s been doing really well the past six months if I’m not mistaken.

Nvidia is securing their position in their market with AI used in their GPUs to maximize efficiency. Pretty safe bet.

I don’t like Facebook, but they’re doing a lot of AI work too. I don’t trust Zucker(((berg))).

>where I get my information
I always look up a stock before I buy it to make sure there wasn’t a fresh scandal or something controversial come out in the last month that will bite me later in the week. The stock as to be clean as a whilste so to speak.
Also I read into Montlyfool more than anything else for information on stock. I don’t trust any of the finance sites or sources as much as Montlyfool. My dad has one if their memberships. For me it was worth it, but I have gone into some things they’ve suggested and it turned into a lemon. So it doesn’t eliminate risk.
I have found

I have found some gems on my own though, like SDRL before it shot up. But that does not happen too often. And I only read that they sold off some assets to eleminate debt and that they would increase their profitability for every barrel of oil by 24%. That was my only indicator along with the fact /biz/ was saying oil was going to go up.

So I'm looking into varies investment means besides but including stocks.
I heard the "intelligent investor" is a must read.
But I've heard some people say that even after the read they font have the skill or knowledge and other stuff to actually get into it.
I'm just wondering are there any prerequisites I need before wasting my time reading this book?
What are undesirable qualities?
Can any smuck with the time and drive to get into stock still come out reasonable well? Reasonable as in not bleeding money but making some gains?
I like learning new things and trying stuff out so I don't think I'll loss interest too quick. Even if I make small gains in the end I think it'll be fun.
Anyways tips? Yes no?

Yes, you've been extremely helpful, and I'm grateful. I wish there was a way to express that in a better way.

Got some questions for anyone to answer if you have the time:

> buy at any point in the red so long as you are fairly certain that the stock will continue to follow its average trend line.

What do you mean by average trend line? Got any more info or links about how you go about these dips?

And how does this work for stocks that may be overvalued? How do I know that a stock like AMD is too high or not? It just dipped 17% for no reason, the sole news being that INTC fixed all their issues, which sounds kinda fishy but nevertheless fucked AMD's price over.

so how do I find a company’s fair value for the short term? The P/e ratios are fucked in the tech sector anyways because as you say, we are at an ATH.

Do you recommend options?

average trend line is something like SMA or EMAs

use trading view, turn on 50/100/200 day EMAs, those are short medium long term trend lines

they act as support frequently, look back in the past and you will be surprised how often a dip ends up bouncing RIGHT off a 50 EMA, or a big correction bounces right off the 200 EMA

>Average trend line
If the graph shows the line going in this direction: / (in general with some big dips spread out).
Good example is WIX, press the one year button to see. There are points where it dips:

>Overvalue
Yeah, I like to look at P/E. My gut told me that Stichfix was too high of a market cap compared to what I'd imagine their possible income to be. So even though Montlyfool had them as a buy on their website, I didn't want to get into it. Especially what happened to me after buying Micron ($MU). Glad I got out of MU by the way.

Tech tends to have a very high price / earning, but that seems to be the norm, at least for now, in that sector. Another reason not to trust the tech stocks for the long terms.

But you can also find an undervalued company with a similar method. What you do is you find a smallcap (1.5 billion to ~3.5 billion) technology based service company, look at their P/E, and compare their marketcap to their more established competition in that field.

If they appear to offer services that are on the same level as a competitor with a high market cap for that field (33 billion for tech service sector to be a more established company), then you can assume that the prospective company may very well be undervalued. Consider that one point in it's favor. Of course, also look at the prince to earnings report. It's not uncommon for companies to be lose money per share, especially when they start out. Just make sure it's close to the $0 per share range, maybe at most losing $0.16.

>How to find fair value in the short term
Well, you want to find evidence/indicators that a company will grow and become more successful. That isn't always reliant on P/E too. Think of it like you're building a case for why "blank" company will increase in value. You need to collect evidence.

For example, Shopify ($SHOP) is reinvesting almost all their money back into their business. That's a good indicator that they're increasing their chances of future success, so we'll consider that a piece of evidence. Also, there really isn't another platform that competes with what they're doing and who they're targeting (you could say eBay and Craigslist, but SHOP is targeting people trying to build professional businesses), that another big plus so we'll consider that a second piece of evidence back the claim that it will succeed in the relatively near future.

Another could be Apple; making an electric car, evidence for success. No debt, evidence lends credibility to their future success. They'll more than likely get government grants to subsidize production of electric cars like Tesla, which means their profits will be increased for the electric cars when their made (this is entering the realm of speculation, but I think you get the point). Their market share of the Chinese market increased massively and you have no reason to doubt that it will increase again, another piece of evidence to point to their success.

You can't tell if the price of something is going to increase tomorrow if you buy today, but base upon the trajectory of the stock's trend line PAIRED with your evidence supporting its future success, you can come to the conclusion that there is a significant amount of reason for you to believe that it wont continue to go down very much if you bought in a day that it dipped 2%. You see what I mean?

so i read this book this year and came out of it with a few things:

1. the market right now is wayyyy overvalued.
2. index funds get you 90%+ of the gains that you could get from managing it yourself.
3. the book does list very specific tools and strategies for finding undervalued stocks. they're mostly in the commentary after each chapter. i'll give you my bookmarks:

pg 196: definition of undervalued stock
pg 224: tax efficiency
pg 276: judging financial planners
pg 302: judging a company for purchase (i think this one is the real world exercise)
pg 375: due diligence resources

good luck, anon. it's a great great read.

>Options
I'll say no. For a lot of reason. Options is the kind of thing where things can be going okay for a while, and it looks really enticing, but once it messes up it can really set you back. I was doing pretty good with them for three weeks in May. Made 500 in a week back when I had roughly 12,000 in the account. But then I traded options in June. It was with OKTA, which was doing super well up till that point. Set me back by a month of profit. I made maybe $1,200 with I believe 22 contracts of options spread between three or four different companies in the first month of doing it (a lot to keep track of), then in mid-June I lost about $1,750 or $1,800 from options. More than 10% of my gains (I only started at the end of April investing).

But here's where you really need to pay attention. I put more of my savings into the stock market and made that money back faster than I lost it.

Although Options may look appealing (specially if you have an investment account with less than $10,000 or $15,000) the risk is not worth it. At least in my opinion.

>Side note:
Here' the secret to real life alchemy anon, this is divine insight anon. So really apply yourself to see the value in this patient strategy. If you want safer easy money, just add more into your investment account and have a goal of making at least 1% return every trade week. If you could do 2% a week, even better.

How much can you make in a year wage cucking it? In California, at least ~$25,000 minimum full time. ~$10,000 part time. So what I say next should be your goal. Work up to having $30,000 in your personal investment account. If you have $10,000 in there already, your 1/3 the way there and congratulations you're further than most people.

Live with your parents, make this money, and add it into your investment account and do the safe strategy of trying to make at most between 1% to 2% return on average a week. The moment you feel greed, or when you say to yourself "I should wait a little more, I think it's going up!" sell. You need to stay on track. The goal is to make modest gains of around ~1% to ~2%. You can approach this a few different ways; you can do this by holding a stock until you reach the 1 or 2% mark of gain over two days then sell, or you can buy three different stocks and sell when one or all three of them reach the 1% mark. You can buy a stock like Paypal when it's down -1.25% then sell it when it increased to -0.14% in the same day. But the point being is this, you stay disciplined.

Also with everything you do, keep this in mind as the main goal and motivation. This is the goal:
One day you will grow your account to $30,000 using a safe strategy like this paired with dumping your own personal income into it. Then if you make 1% you'll be making $300 or $600 if you make 2% every so often. And this is with a much lower risk than options. So you're working your way to making more money while leveraging this ~1% to ~2% strategy.

I do want to say that there is a time and place to hold a company for an extended period. I held SHOP last month for a majority of the month and made 10% then sold since I figured it was too long without an interruption. But the market is very uncertain right now, and tech stocks along with service stocks might deflate very soon. It's really hard to tell. I think the tax cuts really boosted the earnings reports though. So things might've been prolonged and thus the big bear might've been kicked further down the road. This isn't the time to buy and hold in my opinion, too many people investing are cynical and ready to take what they have out at the first sign of trouble. Especially since people have the mentality that the market is on a cycle and will crash very soon. Self-fulfilling prophecy at that point.

I think the next crash wont be as bad as we think it will be frankly.

Hope this helps some anons.

Wow! Every month? That's a lot.
I've heard of teaser rates, but looking at the oil company that may be worth the risk for now. Only problem is when the government along with Apple and Tesla start pushing electric cars hard, it might start taking a hit just based off of the publicity. When this starts to happen, just be sure to sell before the loss in value of stock out weighs the gains you've made from the dividends. I think you'll be fine anon. Plus the USA is now the largest exporter of oil. So their business has probably grown. If you hear any news about that changing you might want to look to bailing.

Assuming you've been in for three months, that stock would have to go down little more than ~30% in value(calculating the increase in value of stock price) to do you damage. So you should have plenty of time to escape with your profits if things go side ways. Plus the most it's dropped this year was around 20% over the course of about 10 trading days at the end of January.

I expect Apple to say something about their electric cars or semi-trucks around December personally. Then a heavy push in 2019 in preparation for 2020.

>put more of my savings into the stock market and made that money back faster than I lost it.

How did you make it back? Seadrill? That thing looks ridiculous to me! How the hell did you do that, I get you looked at the way they started paying their debts and such, but where did you find that info?

Thanks dude! Sounds like great advice, I got 20,000 atm.

Why is 30,000 so important tho? Because it's what I initially started with?

Also, is there a way to hedge/safeguard against sudden stupid crashes? Like we're nearing earnings season, so I expect a lot of volatility and sudden price drops.

What do I do, stop losses? Where should I put stops in that case?

/biz/ kept saying that oil was going to go up, and once I was WTI along with the US oil fund increasing I figured I would just get into it. Few days later it shot up and I sold.
Plus, my dad's the one who brought up Sea Drill just by chance, and since I suspected oil was going to go up anyways do to the reasons, BagHolder mentioned along with Comfy and Big5, that's when I started looking into Sea Drill my self and let the other anons know.

Oh yes, covered calls if I'm not mistaken.
The way to edge against a crash is with either buying an inverse index (which would only payout in the short term I suspect) or the more popper way which is through options tricks.

$30,000 is when you start to hit the elbow of how much extra money you make a week. Really, the goal should be to get up to 50,000 because then that is significant cash that can start to improve your living quality.
>15,000 would yeild 150 extra a week, not too much
>30,000 would yield 300 extra a week, like having a high paying part time job.
>50,000 would give 500 extra a week, almost like having a second full time job proportionally speaking.

And this is achievable in a year in a half at least if any one were to try it! That's the crazy part of it. Jesus bless anon this threads about to end. Best of luck mate.

I've never used them actually. But I would imagine a trailing stop loss on TD Ameritrade at 2.35% would be ideal for safe and dependable stocks.

Bare in mind you set that stop loss AFTER the stock already went down about that much anyways, so if it goes down that much more after you buy in the "dip" that stock might be falling for a couple days. Which also means you'd get an opportunity to make your money back too after it finishes falling.

Always compare current drops to ones that have happened relatively recently in the same companies history to get an idea of where the bottom might** be and where to buy back in. and if you buy back in before it hits the very bottom, thats okay too because you should have a strong conviction that the stock you just bought will go back up anyways in the next week or so.

If I have a stock (SHOP) and at opening it starts to fall from the 0 mark to -1.25% with bobbing up and down between -1.20% and -1.45% I can see that it's weighing heavier on falling down for the rest of the day, so I'd rather sell it, buy one of my fall back dependable stocks(Apple) that I also suspected will go up for the day. Then if I want to; I sell Apple at a profit to make up for my loss on SHOP, and if I wanted to I would buy back in to SHOP at the end of the day in hopes of selling it at the opening of the next day. Because what are the odds that the first dependable stock (SHOP in this example) will be going down the next day like it today?

That's the benefit of only going in stocks that have good reputations. They tend to have upward pressure even after strange dips that aren't expected. Good bounce is good for making the 1 or 2% goal for the week.

Buying at the end of the day on a dependable stock that is down and selling at open of the next day can be a "safe" trading strategy too. And it's not considered day trading. So you can do it every day. WIX might be good for this.
