Hey /biz/

Got at least 5k that I'd like to put into a mutual fund or etf as well as starting recurring monthly deposits. The question is, what is the most common/best to use. I'm in australia and looking at the vanguard retail managed funds

https://www.vanguardinvestments.com.au/retail/jsp/investments/all-products#/retail

And their etfs

https://www.vanguardinvestments.com.au/retail/jsp/investments/all-products#/etf

But not sure what to choose, thoughts?

I just put in 11K and have a 4 funds.
40% in VTI - Total US Stock Market ETF
30% in VXUS - International Stock ex-US ETF
20% in BND - Total Bond Market ETF
10% in VNQ - REIT Index Fund

Rate and offer suggestions if necessary.

What's the minimum one should have before they start investing with mutual funds/etfs?

ETFs don't need much more than 100$ to start.

Mutual funds usually start at 3K investment, and the ones w/ better rates are 10K+. Do ETFs until you get enough to get lower fees from the mutual funds.

My advice would be to buy shares in Whitehaven coal (WHC).
Massive expansion projects are in the works and I'm confident their share price will more than double by years and and potently quintuple in 2 years

Once the 10k mark is hit what funds would be the ones to go with?

Pretty damn good. Consider a 5% allocation to BNDX.

I'm not extremely familiar with Vanguard's offerings outside the US, but yes, that looks like a solid portfolio build.

For someone new to vanguard

If I did an identical portfolio, do I pay taxes on it each year if all I plan to do is "set it and forget it"?

Loosely speaking of course, because I'll be adding to it every month, but no plans to take anything out in the near future.

Index funds (and ETFs) do pay dividends, interest, and maybe some (usually small) amount of capital gains. Those will be taxable outside of a 401k, IRA or similar.

When looking at information about any mutual fund, you can check the disclosures for information about the fund's historical distributions. This will usually be a good indicator.

Whitehaven Coal, WHITF, not WHC. Yes, invest in a company that's lost 80% of it's value in the last 11 months, is on the verge of being delisted by the ASX, and every ratings agency says "Sell" or "Avoid."

Back to /rhg/ with you.

Vanguard health care fund, whatever the symbol is. That's a growth field, and the price is still lower than it should be because of the recent bear market
