can Bitcoin itself be engineered to compete with VISA in transactions per second? is it about blocksize?

yes, and Bitcoin Cash will make it happen. realistically it'll be 30 years before we're even close to VISA in tx count, lots of time to figure out the best ways to do it.

the important thing is to make sure the capacity will be there so business know the crypto they build on top of is future proof.

note that second layers will still be there, it was never about getting rid of them. it was about not limiting the base layer so that 2nd layers become optional instead of mandatory

two ways of handling it

1. state channels - most transactions become direct P2P, and only beginning and end of transacitons become recorded in core blockchain ledger

2. second layer

i think in general, second layer is going to become standard. very little downside. you can sacrifice security for little peepee transactions. its stupid that ALL transactions get the full scale decentralization and security
