How are Dell Technologies shares only worth about 20 billion when (according to Wikipedia) the company owns 82% of VMware, a company worth around 65 billion.

How does this work Bois? Couldn't somebody buy all of the Dell shares and automatically gain majority ownership of VM as well?

because 8% of dell is being traded
8% of 82% of a company bought for 65mill

Oh, so that market cap is only the value of the floated shares? Does that mean Dell is actually worth like 200 billion?

>8% of 82% of a company bought for 65mill
that's 4.264.000.000

you buy 20billion in Dell stock (assuming you could buy it all at that price on the market) to own 8% of it and .less than 6.5% of a 65billion company (4billion worth)

I'm just guessing btw

Makes sense thank you. Watching for their IPO, might be a good cloud computing stock.

reminder that dell is shit, and most businesses moved to HP long ago.

Concept is correct yes. Look into what enterprise value is. This is the price you must pay to take over the entire company and is conclusive of equity value and net debt

Learn something new everyday, thanks.

Are there any good sites or sources to find out enterprise values of companies? Most are only interested in market capitalisation.
