/biz/, Junior Finance Major in college here.

Its hitting me that I've wasted my first two years of college partially due to a sort of nervousness but also due to uncertainty. I didn't waste it messing around, it was largely self improvement stuff that ate up my time, but its helped me very little in furthering my career.

I don't want to become a wagecuck, how do I end up in the top 10% of finance majors. This isn't just me asking for advice but I wanted to make a resource thread for others in similar situations.

From people who've either made it in the industry or know how to make it, where do I begin. I've got a good internship opportunity and want to start networking in clubs but what are top employers looking for?

Idk whether I should start by reading through something like Wall Street Oasis or go for Math, whether I should just try to network a shit ton over the next two years or go for an MBA. How difficult will this be if I'm just starting now?

Post any relevant info on how to get out of the wagecuck trap I don't want to end up in some 50k a year analyst job. Worst comes to worst I'll join the army or something, but ideally I want to get myself into a position where I could get a job at a big investment bank or even a hedge fund. I'm not opposed to doing international stuff either if thats high paying.

Same story here, graduating with a Finance degree in December. Don’t have an internship and don’t give a fuck. I’m going to find a chill and relaxing job while I learn programming on the side. I’d rather do nearly anything that isn’t making excel spreadsheets and eating my boss’ ass all day.

Should have gone to a top 10 school. Your best bet is to learn programming and work in Fintech, unless you wanna work shit jobs and try to score high enough on the GMAT for a top MBA.

Hey low iq, did you really fall for the meme? Every kid and his grandma is going into finance since the wolf of wall street and the big short came out. The field is so over saturated, no one gives a fuck about you unless it's Ivey league school with top marks. Think about the limited number of the positions everyone wants and the ever increasing supply of schmucks like you trying to get them. Nepotism is huge in the industry, half those spots filled by family/close friends of higher up's there the other half by the top grads which are actually oh so plentiful

Maybe, if you get in. But even then I see all these things as almost meme tier... What's so great about being the top wageslave? The top normie? You're just a wage slave on roids.. The best versions of wage cucks. Not too appealing to me. I've seen family who are SVP at fancy banks and do quant shit and research all day and they're worked into the ground. Into the ground for like 750k a year sure with bonus you'll make low millions, but take In taxes and lifestyle and honestly the reward for all that work is meager even if nominally is a big number. Best way to live is to be sovereign yourself and start a business, that way the effort is purely for yourself

What year are you in? The way it typically works is if you want to stand out, you need to definitely focus on getting a strong GPA, try and join your school's investment club if they have one, or whatever the premier finance student group is (most reputable schools will have a student-run fund that manages either real or fake money and is structured like a buy-side shop). Third year is typically where you want to get a key internship at a reputable firm so you can secure yourself a return offer upon graduation. Don't fuck it up.

3rd year here, yeah I'm going to join some clubs, I've got an interview for an internship at a hedge fund lined up so if I don't fuck that up I can probably get that, I have a 3.9+ gpa, and I'm willing to do whatever I need to, I'm just freaking out because if I don't start now I'm going to end up with the npcs

GPA isn't the end all and be all. You need to have some extracurriculars and be well rounded if you want to stand out amongst some of these guys. Networking is far more important than grades, which is the mistake I made. Better to have that slip (a bit) if it means you're spending time making connections and trying to build out your network, because almost all decent jobs get filled through someone giving you the heads up or tap on the shoulder and putting in a good word for you.

In general, finance and banking is not doing too well currently. Everybody is laying off staff at record numbers. In europe some banks might go bankrupt even

You should use your jobs to learn the ropes of the Industy, then innovate where you're passionate. Idk I guess this isn't for everybody but you have to truly have a burning desire and passion for something and optimize the systems or product and go out on your own. Either start a business or invest heavily, learn to structure your assets for proper protection

honestly, school or gpa doesn't even matter. you're gonna have to network a lot for your last two years. talk to people. learn how to make friends. you never know who might help you or give you a position at a reputable company.
literally all you need to do is know the right people and be present at the right time.
good luck

OP, I am a thirld world guy actually doing two graduations- one is electrical engineering and the other is computer engineering.

You dont have to know everything, you have to "appear" like you do, to be able to get the enough grades to pass.

Dont be fooled, knowledge is power, but power in a cuck hand means shit, so if you aint so good into have a npc brain that record everything focus on another areas.

Life is a mix of things, if you have time you can make it with enough resources and efforts, just dont listen to the ones that will discourage you.

Its better to have a graduation than to have none, you can always try to build your own business, but you have to stand your ground if you dont.

Be a man, have balls, invest on your talents and you will make it.

Stop being a PUSSIE.

Dont drop out, that shitty piece of paper can convince normies to pay you an extra 20K a year, and you might not qualify for jobs without it.

Instead, focus on keeping GPA up by taking literally the easiest classes your University offers and using your extra time to network and learn skills needed to succeed in whatever field you actually care about. If you dont know, spend the time exploring instead of watching Netflix.

Do as many internships as possible, preferably good ones. The specific club doesn't matter to much, but obviously treasurer of the investment club is going to be better than president of the anime club. Your main goal is to show off "leadership skills" and show that you don't do the bare minimum of work. Take as many math classes as possible, but stick with finance; a minor or double-major would be fine though. Read wall street oasis. They'll give you a good idea of how most finance careers flow, but remember that they aren't everyone. Network as much as you can. Don't get an MBA. The MBA card should be saved until you have work experience in one field, and want to move up in the business world. Using it after your bachelors is a waste.

The military actually isn't that bad for a business career. Obviously the skills don't transfer over that well. (but showing off strong math skills can soften this a bit) If you want to minimize wagecucking then here's what I'd do: Use all your networks and aggressively apply/cold-call HUNDREDS of places. If they don't reply, ask again later. If all you can get is some shitty analyst job then stay there for a year or two, and get in touch with an army recruiter. Fill out the paperwork to apply for OCS. (You've been getting in shape by this point, right?) If you get accepted then stay in for around 4 years before leaving to get your MBA. Being a Captain, having a bachelors, and having prior finance work experience will make you extremely tempting to employers. Your resume will also look really good to any college, so you should definitely be getting into a top business school; assuming your bachelors has good grades.

You can avoid wagecucking. Just remember that those IB jobs will take up ALL your time. 100 hour work weeks are the regular. So you might not be a wagie, but you'll still probably be a ragie.

Nobody gives a shit about your grades. At least not in STEM. As long as you finished your degree and lied enough on your resume to get your first job nobody honestly gives a shit how much of a good boy studentcuck you were.
