also, dont tke the midpoint that they give you during the day as "market price"

the market price is wherever someone is willing to buy it off you. if its an illiquid options market, that means its usually all the way down at the bid. also if it was a call and it was expiring today, then you wouldve been responsible to HAVE to buy 100 of the underlying. if you DONT have enough for it, then they HAVE to get rid of it. one way of doing it is cash settlement, where they buy the stock for you, then immediately sell them for market price. if market price is down substantially at that moment, you can get fucked tho

They didn't sell it below market price, they sold it for the current highest bid price. Market price is usually the difference between the bid and the ask. It doesn't mean you will get that unless you put a limit sell on it and wait, which takes time, time that you didn't have.
