Why is this not a thing yet? And I'm not talking about a shitcoin, I'm talking about a platform where you can rent out your car and get paid in fiat, crypto, whatever.

Please no CAR shitcoin ideas, only payment-agnostic platform development ideas and brainstorming.

Why would this NOT work? If it can work, can we start it here and make it fully decentralized and smart contract based from the start?

We need an autonomous company created from nothing to come into existance just for the lulz, it should be /biz/'s mid term collective lifegoal.

decentralized sharing economy, the world is full of cars just rotting away in a garage, tourists would be saving lots of money not paying Hertz an arm and a leg

Fully decentralized doesnt exist yet sadly. Holo and link might get us there but as of right now is not very possible to have such a system.

Storing data and retrieving it is too expensive and there is no common mass adopted tech that bridges the decentralized world with the centralized internet aside from tor, maybe. So normies would need to install a plethora of shit and then some to use your envisioned platform. Meta mask, blockstack, and so forth.

Mozilla appears to be working on a decentralized friendly browser that if adopted could very well be a first step but as of right now decentralized shit beyond ponzi smart contracts are a fantasy.

What happens when someone totals your car and there isn't enough funds in the renter wallet and/or insurance account?

You could make a token, make each token linked to a VIN, and now you have decentralized vehicle marketplace. You trade the tokens linked to VINs and own whichever vehicle you hold the token to.

Advanced vehicles can be started by sending 1 IOTA from your token address to the motor starter.

Nice, I dislike the token idea on principle (too many of those) but I like where you're going with this
