Is being materialistic and money oriented a bad way to live your life?

A temporary and extremely rich coworker who was some 40+ years my senior told me that chasing money will lead to no money, was he right? I'm very close friends with the individual who's the accountant for our department, so I happen to know that this person was being paid silly money for his role and wasn't bullshitting.

The only drive I have in life at the minute is related to possessions I want to own, but I've been told that the wanting is better than the having.

What's the deal?

Some goal is better than no goal, but generally that's how it works. Think back at all the things you once wanted, once you get them they just fade into the background and become the new normal.

Whatever keeps you going, that's my philosophy. Getting out of bed isn't easy, whatever helps you is good enough, whether that's money or material possessions. Eventually you'll figure out something more noble to drive you if you look for it, I guess.

It's a terrible way to live. To me, money is just security. I hardly buy anything and have no desire to.

There is a distinction.

If you blindly chase money for the sake of money, then he's right. It's just paper or numbers on a computer screen after all.

Whereas if you pursue a higher calling, be that personal satisfaction by starting a business/providing an in-demand service to people, then you will be compensated as a reward. Both financially and emotionally.

If you want to spend your hard earned gains on material possessions then so be it. It'll likely give you some satisfaction, just not as much as you think.

How does that even make sense?
Poor people chases money to be able to live.
Rich people (Hollywood rich) chases money to keep their materialistic ego's up to date.
The powerful rich people (the actual elite) chases money because money is pure power and enough of it can make you control the world.

Everyone chases money, one way or another.

I think the general idea was that if you fulfil your career it will lead to more money than chasing money itself.

>> No.10832942

It's about growth. Growth in building your health (getting a better body), building your business, building your wealth, building your family. As you grow you feel more important and better about yourself. Those give you good feels. Happiness where you have all this money and then feel blissful all the time is a meme.

Your coworker wasn't growing, so he didn't feel validated and therefore without validation, we feel unimportant in this world. And feeling unimportant hurts.

no, like, if you chase it man, you can never reach it. but if you sit in the stillness it will magically come to you.

I have a friend making $300k per year at 26yo on wall street. Guy is so cheap you wouldn't think he made that kind of money and he likes money. so if you are smart about it being in love with money can lead you to having lots of money

Live your life how you want to.

If you seek fulfillment however, it can only come from within for a time period extending longer than 3 months(personal experience).
