Javascript is fine for certain tasks. It's not fine for anything that's speed critical. Javascript is fine for web apps because 90% of the inefficiencies come from network latency anyways. There are no operating systems written in Javascript though. Try to guess why.

nodejs google V8 does make javascript run atleast decently fast. of course not comparable to c++ runing speeds, but the way ARK is build it is still capable of more TPS than a buttcoin can deliver. soooo yeah.

The bottleneck in transaction speed is doing the cryptography to verify that transactions are signed correctly and for delegates to cryptographically sign the blocks they forge. The code library that does this is already native and not running in javascript. For everything else, like running dapp logic or other fancy plugins, javascript is just fine for the job.

I'm a software developer, but I work mainly on .NET backends.

JavaScript is not suitable for OS or critical software only because the compilers and interpreters available were not created for that purpose, but in the future there may be more efficient ways and tools to allow programmers to do that.

No wonder JavaScript is now hugely used in the Server side, even if it was never its purpose.
