My manager got fired today in a really big, heated exchange. Likely all of his burden will fall on me. Should I ask for a raise before/while all the work falls on my desk? I don't want to be doing 3x more work for 0x the pay.

How do I successfully office politik bros

>> No.10812648

you should maintain a good attitude and gladly accept the work. do a good job and ensure your additional work has visibility. then in 3 months you ask for more $$. sounds cucked but it's probably your best bet.

Just quit
I was in your shoes and it's not worth it to gape your asshole for corporate just to get good boy points
You'll most likely get 1/3rd of what they were paying your manager and that's only if you do twice as good as he did

Thanks for the advice lads, I'd say I definitely have the leverage & I'm due for a raise soon anyway, I am quite valued in the company, so I feel like I can get away with being a cunt right now. I really think I can get away with a 10-20% raise right now.

If you are going to get a shitload more work ask for more money.
If its 3x the work, its worth asking because being fired or quitting is probably better than 3x work with the same salary.

>"Good morning [boss], how're you today?"
polite conversation for at least 2 minutes if possible
>"How are we going to function with X gone?"
>"Well, anon, you're getting a promotion! You get to do X's job now, isn't that fun?"
You say >"So I'll have all of the responsibilities of a manager? Would I be able to document that somehow?"
He's going to say one of two things:
1. Absolutely, you'll see it in your pay check (most owners go this route, they wouldn't have brought it up and wouldn't have changed your pay had you not asked, but they can't deny you the raise legally and its not worth the legal issue)
2. "Well, we'll let you do the job for a bit and see how you do."
This is bad. You have to say something along the lines of:
>"Sir, I'm really not prepared to take on a promotion if I have nothing to show for it."
Try not to say the word work. Look him in the eye when you do it. Mean it. Also, look on Monster or other places tonight for jobs, whether or not you're successful you'll still see whats out there and you'll be more confident going in.

> Likely all of his burden will fall on me. Should I ask for a raise before/while all the work falls on my desk? I don't want to be doing 3x more work for 0x the pay.

you would need to ask for raise *after* its confirmed you will be taking on his responsibilities, and so as not to offend your masters, you would need to happily do those responsibilities to a high degree of quality for at least 1-2 weeks before asking the raise.

sounds cucked, but first post is correct and i agree with that anon. that's why it's called wagecucking. you're basically dependent on your employer, even though in actuality it should be a more balanced relationship of both employees and employer being co-dependent on each other.

if you want more bargaining power then start looking for a job elsewhere and apply, just in case. have backups, and some savings, etc.

i quit my job in 2015 without asking for a raise, and just quit out of frustration, before having anything lined up. and i basically fucked myself badly.

broaden your fucking horizon. Even if you do haggle your way into a higher position here, now you are beholden to it cause you're making 20% more here than anywhere else you can go. Aka, now they own you.

Here's what you do. Do a great fucking job. Craft a story out of it. Now you have your fucking "name one time you were faced with a challenge and how you overcame it" bullshit interview story

that is the best you are guaranteed to gain from this. everything else you manage to get is cherry on top. but bottom line is do a good job.

are you still there? if i got that sort of response i'd be looking elsewhere. my original "be optimistic and do your best" post has roots in working in a large corporate environment, where the budget excuse doesn't really work when you know the company is doing well and strings can be pulled where necessary.

Let's put this way my work has increased a bunch, 1 girl quit months ago, but the person that took on her load is lazy and incompetent and has other duties as it is. Even then I was handling more than her. Now another person is quitting. However a new person starts the day after, that I will likely have to train. Assuming she doesn't quit due to high workload right now. May be able to jump ship for another crappy job, dont really want it but hate my current job.

Perhaps go in there with the mentality of either they give you a raise or you quit on the spot. If you quit and they do give you a raise to keep you, just remember start looking for another job since they probably wont like that you pulled that.

specifically say "i've been meaning to talk to you about taking on more responsibility actually. I think I'd be great in a more senior role. Since I'll be taking on more demanding tasks, I'd like a salary and title commensurate with the responsibilities"

be prepared with a salary you want - do some research on similar positions in your area on sites like glassdoor.com.

If they offer a figure first, say "i was thinking X" If they ask you to provide a figure, ask for slightly more than you want (the top of the range you find on glassdoor) and let them negotiate down to where you're happy

You need leverage and courage. I'd keep in contact with the old manager because if you have to quit you can play it like you were only their because management was holding shit down. You need leverage like an emergency fund, an alternative cash-flow, or job, or raw courage required to quit and find new work with a period of unemployment (It depends on your skill-set and demand) - You may also need to figure out what the new title may be (Are you the manager if you take on those duties?) and what similar people doing that job get paid (What's the average wage for role in country)

Once you've sorted that you wait until they sneak the responsibilities in your day-to-day and then immediately "have a chat" with the person responsible about your concerns and pay. You can state that if they want you to do X then they need to pay you Y like every other company does. Reveal your leverage without it being a threat and be ready to negotiate GL
