Monero offers close to zero forward anonymity, meaning that somebody sends you monero and wants to know when and where you sent it.

The anonymity set of forward anonymity is number of transactions that also included your input as a mixin. Even one inclusion can take weeks.
That's why every transaction needs churning, ie. several transactions that do nothing but spend the output, over a period of several days.

Backward traceability (money sent somewhere and you want to know from where) is better, but still very poor. Knowing 40% of all spent inputs (security agencies can get spent inputs history from all legal exchanges) allows deanonymization of 1 transaction in 40.
Which sounds good until you realize that 27 withdrawals to a legal exchange give >50% probability of the transaction being traced (eg. from otherwise known output from darknet market).

Last but not least, the entire history of monero can be deanonymized by quantum computers if they ever happen. Mind the limitations period...

Monero has shitcoin-level dishonest marketing. The offered anonymity is only enough to hide against non-state actors. Only shielded zcash transactions are truly anonymous and private.
