hahahaha this was the absolute WORST aspect of working a small business retail job in the hometown, 5 years after high school graduation

In school I was always the loner existing on the fringes. But we lived in a small rural town and everyone knew each other fairly well.

Rather than go to college I kept my highschool job at the hardware store. Every so often someone from my high school would stop in. Now hardware is about as good as it gets for retail, but I couldn't help feel like a fucking loser. Usually I'd duck out into the back room for 15 minutes and hope they had left.

Although towards the end of my time their, my classmates no longer recognized me. I was a comically thin, forgettable guy all throughout grade school. Upon graduation I grew to 6'5, became more attractive in the face, and began working out. Several of my high school crushes came in and would check me out or raise an eyebrow. I'm unsure if they knew it was me. I didn't have the gall to ask.

Sometimes I had to cover the cash register which was absolute torture in these moments. It's actually the reason I ended up quitting. Although only a few people ever verbalized it to me, most of the locals began to wonder why the fuck I was still working there. I'm not a complete idiot. It was shameful.
