What is there to say? I bought a lottery ticket once just to feel the odds when I saw that none of my numbers were picked. It gets said a lot I think, but imagine a lottery coming up where the winning numbers are 1 2 3 4 5 6. It seems like it should be even more unlikely because of the meaning we impute to that string, but it may as well be any other drawing. The odds against you are just galactic in scale, there is really no reason to play beyond maybe the occasional entertainment you can get from buying a ticket for a big pot and imagining how you’d feel if you won.

I buy it when the prize is bigger than 50 mil for the entertainment.

The appeal of the lottery is you get a cheap ticket for the moonshot at a large jackpot. The odds however are so enormous the chance of you winning ever is virtually nil, even the odds for lower prizes are so disgustingly stacked against you you'll never make more than you put in, especially if you're stupid enough to put it all back into more lottery tickets. Even so if you only buy them occasionally and limit your spending to 1 per draw it gives you something to look forward to and dream about winning. Anybody buying more than that however is simply throwing away their money, the odds are so great your chances of winning will never not be 'virtually impossible' and that money adds up real fast. If you're seriously dreaming about a miracle saving you from the wageslave grind, look elsewhere because it will not happen and only make things worse. But it's still a cheap moonshot and a little fun if you accept that.

i don't see the problem of buying 1/2 lottery tickets every drawing. you have a chance of making it forever no matter how small instead of a complete 0 chance. the only problem comes if you're spending like 10+ dollars on that shit every time, you'll be quickly draining your money while paying for diminishing chances.

based on some mafs, its actually statistically worth it if the pot is big enough. like the time it hit 1 bil or something.

Some people are just unable to understand the concept of expected value, no matter how many times you explain it to them.
