they have very different personalities, much like people and like dogs as well. I've had a great many cats, usually because other people bring them in and I end up taking care of them. So here are some tips:

1. inside solo cats tend to lose their mind and act strange compared to well kept cats, so get two if you're keeping them inside so they have some company. (unless you plan on being around all day)

2. it's alright to let them out if you don't live in the country and animals aren't getting eaten in your area. This is helpful for male cats especially.

3. there's a difference between female and male cats, males can be much more aggressively playful.

4. if you raise the cat from a kitten, their personality will probably match yours very well and the cat will be very attached and affectionate. I had a kitten once that didn't really care about me much, then she caught a chill and had the shivers so I kept her under a blanket with me for awhile. After that she was a constant companion. They might be less cuddly if you get them older or don't do something like that which is a bonding experience.

5. Now I have an alpha chad cat that beats up the entire neighborhood and sometimes me. But, his fearlessness amuses me and he's very conversational. Too smart for his own good, maybe. With such a cat, he's trying to communicate and expects me to understand him from his actions and if he thinks I'm ignoring him he'll attack to get my attention. That is to say, dealing with a cat is a lot more like dealing with a person than a dog. A dog follows no matter what, and therefore does not resemble any person. A cat has its own will but if you are thoughtful and observant you can get them to do what you want, just like people.

Most of them are really cool. Be more patient with a cat than you would with a dog. They are really sweet once you get close to them and are very social despite the cliches.

This is why I want to get one or two maybe, because the only experience I've had with cats is other people's cats, and I know it'll be way different if I raise it from a kitten myself. I'd want an outdoor cat I think, do they really just wander around and come back? How do you guarantee it doesn't just leave for good? I'd want it for outdoors at least so I could put it's litterbox outside or near the exit to outside so that shit doesn't spread disease in my house.

The biggest question is, if you live in the US, is can you afford one?

Ever since pet insurance has become a thing vet bills are through the fucking roof. A dog can cost more than a kid these days. My mom's dog racked up 7K worth of pet bills in a year.
One way to save some cash is to adopt one that spayed already, if you go for the "OMG kitten" you have a pretty hefty cat bill coming from spaying. Plus food, flea treatment, checkups, all that shit. Used to be cats were cheap pets, now? Fucking expensive - even without doing the indulgent bullshit like getting their teeth cleaned and bullshit like that. But just the basics - shots, flea treatment, etc, it's an expense you need to be aware of, before you get one.

you keep the cat in doors awhile, make sure it gets accustomed to you, then you let it out. They don't tend to wander past where they're comfortable, so they don't go too far. If they do get lost, they say put their litter box outside so they can smell it. I wouldn't keep a litter box outside otherwise, it's pointless.

My chad cat was one that I just found. A previous owner got a new kitten and he was so offended that he refused to ever go back to her. So I found him in my apartment complex. One time he fell asleep in the back of someone's truck and woke up on the other side of the city. Some woman found him and brought him back, he was chipped and I never knew it.

He really hasn't cost me much money at all. I moved to a new area and he didn't wish to go out for about a month, then slowly went out more and more. So, I'd say go out with your cat a few times to introduce them to things. They also may not have the temperament to be an outside cat and would be better off inside if they seem timid or gentle.
