okay for example what if you expect bitcoin to make a big move of $1000, up or down it doesn't matter. if you then open 2 positions of $100 on 5x both short and long, you would still make profit either way btc goes correct?

I just woke up, so I can't really think straight, so forgive me if this sounds dumb... but don't they cancel each other out? If you make money on one position, you're still losing the same amount of money on the other position. So it's like you didn't make anything

not if it's on 2 seperate accounts.

could actually work, imagine going 50x leverage long on one and 50x leverage short on another.

let's say bitcoin jumps 200$ up in price, the short is liquidated but your long position evens it out and could even turn into more profit, no?

>> No.10510237

>>10510227
so? they'll still get liquidated

>> No.10510250

>>10510230
so if we assume that btc proceeds to go up another 100$, we've made profit.

BUT

it would just be the same as if we started only the long at the +200$ mark where the short got liquidated. doesn't do anything

>> No.10510251

>>10510230
yes this is exactly what im saying, if you expect a big move it wouldn't be a bad i dead to make a yolo degenerate trade both ways

>> No.10510262

>>10510250
basically when you short and long at the same time, you can only get out with + - 0. either trade that you opened is "backed up" by the other one, but only until it gets liquidated, at which point you are breakeven and you don't have an advantage anymore

do you not understand that only one of those trades has to make enough profit to cover the entry price for both, so of course one of them will get liquidated but the one that doesn't will make up for the loss

>> No.10510315

>>10510278
the one that doesn't gets liquidated will, like you said, make up for the loss. you didn't gain or lose anything up to this point. and at this point you only have one trade left open. so how is this one trade that is still open any different from just opening a single trade anyway?

let's assume

BTC price 7000
open long and short at the same time, liquidation price for short: 7500, for long: 6500

BTC proceeds to pump to 7500.

your short position is liquidated, and thus closed. however you didn't lose money up to this point, because the long position covers it.

from this point you ONLY have the long trade open anymore. so it would be the exact same as if you would have just gone long at 7500, without any other trade involved.

you don't gain anything with this. the only result that you can get, is, that your trades even out and that's it.

anyone that still doesn't understand is confirmed brainlet

>> No.10510379

>>10510278
ok so here is some math. Say you got $100 on one account and $100 on other, and btc is 7500.
You long 50x on one, thats 5000/7500 = 0.6666 btc bought at 7500.
You short 50x on the other, so $5000 at 7500.
Price goes up $200 and you close the long, you made 0.6666 * 7700 = $5133. 5133 - 5000 = $133. So 133 profit on the long, and the short liquidated obviously. 133 - 100 = $33. You made 33 bucks by risking to get both your positions liquidated. Not bad, now try with 1k on each and see how long you last on this market.
Not to mention, you made 33 bucks because it price rose $200, if it rose say $150 before going down, you got your short liquidated (or pretty damn close to it) and you lost 1 buck instead of winning 33. Are you sure you wanna gamble this way?

Margin trading is confusing at first, trust me you dont wanna get into it unless you really know what you're doing. All these anons getting just'd on alts, they dont know the pain that is liquidation. Stay away from it

thanks ya’ll. OP , read your replies please. one last bit of advice for someone who is clearly new on bitmex: be careful dude. Put in like a TINY fraction of whatever you were thinking , and use ONLY that until you have proven to yourself that you are capable of doubling or tripling that small amount. I would even go as far as to say: do not add more money until you have made one WITHDRAWAL first. that will take some time to learn, and you will be liquidated before you learn to be disciplined about margins.

>> No.10510607

>>10510536
not that dangerous in the sense that you wont get liquidated, but you will still lose money on the long run most likely. If you do get in there and nail some trades, take the profits and never go back again. Dont make the mistake of thinking you are some pro trader cause you nailed a couple trades, thats how people get confident and lose their stacks.

Because you'll need a full 100% ROI to recover the position you got liquidated. You will be making profit at 130% instead of making profit at 30%.
