So far I like XRP or ETH and its smart contract idea.

One thing I'm still missing with cryptos is if blockchain tech is so good and is ready to perform a revolution within our economic system.
Why would we need a crypto currency at all?

They are all priced off of the USD or EUR fiats.
So are cryptos actual currencies? I don't get it.

If tomorrow I chose to use ETH to own a house.
I should convert my money to ETH transfer it and once the contract is fulfilled the second part receives a sum of ETH to sell again?

So ETH was never the currency to start with.

Why not simply apply the blockchain technology to use smart contracts on already existing currencies?

It's not quite ready for any type of revolution yet. Too many problems with security and scalability.

Almost everyone treats them like commodities instead of currencies. As long as the prices keep skyrocketing no one will want to spend them/

But if you're interested in XRP, take a look at Interledger. It's a light interoperability protocol kind of like TCP/IP. It could allow for some amazing things, like being able to pay in any currency (fiat or crypto) and they can receive it in the currency of their choice.

XRP is always a choice of noobs. Then you do an actual research and switch to XLM, LINK and ETC.
