Why is it that financiers and software companies make so much more money than the verticals that they service? I know the answer is supply and command, but how is it that you can have (for example) someone just trading commodity futures making more money than the commodities themselves actually sold for? Is there actual value being provided, or is it really just a case of zero sum betting with winners and losers? Is there any literature which speaks to the effect of this sort of zero sum exchange and how it seems to interfere with the efficient market hypothesis?

How does google make so much more money than its clients?

Seriously don't overthink the concept you're questioning. 1 software platform, used by 80% of a vertical, at an average cost of 0.10% of each organisation's revenue, adds up man. Like this is genuinely a really simple concept:
>grug own whole jungle
>grug beat other tribe with clubclub when they stay in grug jungle
>one day grog tribe gib berry for jungle home
>grug take berries from grog tribe
>grug take berries from drongo tribe
>grug take berries from gorgo tribe
>soon, grug have more berries than all tribes
>grug use berry to buy more jungle, make ongo and bongo tribe pay berries to stay there too

Not sure if this answers your question, but the guy who made the most money during the 1840s Gold Rush was the guy selling shovels, not panning for gold. This is also why the Wolf of Wal St chose to broker stocks for a commission instead of trading his own capital
