Why is VEN being so dumped right now? I haven't been able to keep up with news lately because of college and my part-time job.

Any bad news about the project? Any deadline they didn't meet? Any bearish rumour making every single Rajesh on planet Earth sell their bags?

for an x node, you can own and operate a node at any point

No particularly bad news. All the FUD you see is mostly old shit regarding things from six months ago. What did happen recently was that mainnet launched, but they haven’t started VeThor generation (equivalent of Gas) until the token swap is complete which will take another month. So that’s like having NEO without GAS being generated yet. There are no transactions on mainnet for that reason, and so none of VeChain’s clients have moved from the private to the newly launched public chain.

The dump itself is probably a result of the node holders being free to trade during the token swap. Normally those X-Node holders had to keep their tokens in the wallet or else they’d lose their node status, but during this token swap node monitoring is paused. They keep the node as long as they get back at least the same amount as they had before once monitoring resumes in a month or so, but y’know, they might as well use this last opportunity to crash the price and use their stack to accumulate more before it’s locked up for good.
