Swede here. First of all I should point out that that article is from 1st April 2018 (it's not a joke though, just old).

I haven't heard any news regarding the e-krona for many months. Nothing is certain, just discussions going on.

It does make sense though. Sweden is almost completely without paper money, we pay with cards or Swish (a bank app on out phone, works just like crypto except that it has 0 fees and is always instant every day of the week).

The state central bank is worried that our economy basically gets driven by private companies, less and less stores accept paper money. So in order to ensure that the state keep power and do not end up in a situation where a bunch of private companies can cripple the country's economy they are discussing whether or not to make a crypto currency in addition to SEK.

I don't like our cashless society, banks need to have the threat of people withdrawing money. But who's going to do that if we can't use paper money anywhere? Luckily our main places for buying food still accept cash but from the way things are going who knows how long before they stop too.
