Mt.Gox was just a trigger, and it could have been any other trigger. By that time, no one was using Mt. Gox, there were other, better places to buy and sell Bitcoin.

That said. A LOT of people got burned by the assholes and early adopters and exchanges. The resentment will linger for a long time. Probably another year to year and a half of horizontal movement, UNLESS there is some miraculous adoption event and people begin to use this shit in commerce.
