The human brain evolved over millions of years to be as efficient as possible. If you don't actually try to apply what you learn in the books you read its going to discard it and whatever you read will be gone within a few weeks or months.

The only usefulness in reading is if you're actually going to apply it. If you're reading just to feel productive then you're just wasting your time.
