mid 30's here, I started with playing DOOM2 via direct dialup BBS lines (TANGO BBS in Toronto). Most of my friends had computers and we'd also do direct dialup modem to eachother often. Duke3D, Warcraft II, Rise of the Triad were all pretty popular choices..
The internet was born shortly after and even that used to be accessed for me by logging into a portal via the paid BBS subscription.

Soon after came AOL CD's and CompuServe and all that shit.

I used to play multiplayer doom 2 in cooperative mode using a direct dial up connection (in 1994). Then I moved on to Quake. I played quake online and through a LAN with my friends as well. I actually got laid thanks to q3a, it made me go out to net cafes with some outgoing classmates, they introduced me to some girls, sealed the deal.

FPS games started going downhill since quake 2. They became more forgiving, less hardcore. Todays games are a joke in comparison. If any game gets release with powerful guns then kids will start crying on reddit and the developers will nerf the game making it into more of a random chance who gets the kill.
