In one of the big $100mil hacks it was because the multisig contract deployed by the eth team had the "send" function exposed to public instead of private.

Some research found that Solidity had defaulted functions to public, documented functions to private, then a jr dev had modified the prebaked contract and deleted the explicit private declaration on the send.

After that is when I decided I wanted nothing to do with ethereum. The casual "muh growing pains" attitude solidified my choice
