I used to live in Asia. I agree that they have a different concept of empathy/altruism. But it isn't "West human, Asia soulless."

China/Korea: Low sense of duty to society at large; people will spit in public, litter, and ignore the plight of strangers. However, there is an extremely high sense of duty to family, way above and beyond what's present in the west. Parents are stricter with their children but seem to genuinely care about their kids' success far more than the average set of western parents. Gifts are extremely generous, and many will do literally anything for people they're related to by blood or marriage. Unscrupulous people can take advantage of this, but even when it's known that someone is leeching "they're still family." People external to society (immigrants, tourists) are more accepted than in Japan, but less so than in the west.

Japan: Extremely high sense of duty to society; no crime, no littering, constant apologizing, bowing, door-holding, etc. Family life is treated like a second job, and married couples are more akin to coworkers than lovers. Separate beds for spouses are surprisingly common. Children are expected to succeed, but parents don't do as much for them and won't bend over backwards for them nearly as much as their Chinese/Korean counterparts. Extended family is about as important as in the west, so less so than in China/Korea. People external to society (immigrants, tourists) are treated OK, but are always "others."
