Once in a while a Boomer gets lost in the internet being in his Boomer mindset, remembering 1989 like it was yesterday and assuming everything is still the same.

money skelly learnt chinese in a couple months on an app and speaks it fluently. I lived in china for 6 months with a chinese family who didn't speak english and could only just get by in everyday life and basic conversations. Depends on you and how much you apply yourself.

Reading is rather easy, studying the HSK vocab will get you great chinese gains. Speaking isnt that difficult either, the grammar is very simple, the order they combine words is intuitive too.
Understanding them speak is hell though. Tones + 2-syllable-max words requires too much processing power for the unfamiliar brain. I lived there for two years and am only intermediate at best. I can read like a pro though

gotta love those "fluent in a couple of months" urban legends, later it turns out they can barely ask for directions with a terrible accent
