CUP AND HANDLE JUST FORMED ON THE DAQ

I'm thinking about re-organizing my finances into tranches based on years of runway.
1st tranche/year: cash (checking/savings)
2rd tranche/year: VOO and other Vangaurd funds
3rd tranche/year: QLD and other tech stocks
4th tranche/year: SPY LEAPS
If I go to this, then I need to immediately pull 7 months out of cash into VOO, and then put 1 year and 7 months worth of expenses into SPY LEAPs
Is this insane?

That's okay anon, I did a bad trade with STZ a few weeks ago. I went to play their ER and took a $25 diagonal calendar spread. Volatility dropped and I lost $900 because I didn't check my vega exposure. Live and learn.

Look at it this way: the market is efficient. Everything is priced in. The market knows what the historical value and volatility of metals is going to be. It takes into account news events. Any arbitrage opportunities are immediately solved.
I will repeat that: any arbitrage opportunities are immediately solved.
This means you cannot get greedy with options long term. Options should only be used as an extension of normal stock trading, but doing it on leverage and not tying up capital so you can have more concurrent trades open at a time. Derivatives also means you have a completely picture of risk/reward before opening the trade. If you keep losing on options, you need to reevaluate how you're trading them.
In other words, *safe and consistent* returns on options are not going to be much better than bonds or the risk free rate; that is, you should expect 4-8% long term writing options. The only reason to buy them is if you're hedging another position. Now that cash isn't trash, bonds are actually attractive. Why would I invest in a company that "might" post 8% returns if I can just go to cash and ride out the volatility and earn 4-5%?

>In economics and finance, a Glownigger Market is said to occur when a country's financial policymakers begin manipulating econometric data for their political benefit. [1] This may be accompanied by organized propaganda campaigns, hidden monetary easing, as well as other forms of financial repression, in order to reinforce the illusion that a nation's troubled economy is sound and resilient. [2, 3] In a Glownigger Market, stocks may seem to rally, even irrationally so, in the face of worsening economic conditions. However, while the goal of a Glownigger Market is to either delay or prevent a politically undesireable financial correction from occurring, the policy actions that led to the Glownigger Market invariably increase the severity of the subsequent financial crisis. By attempting to overpower healthy corrective market forces, a Glownigger Market causes extreme capital misallocation that can turn a minor economic downturn into a severe and protracted economic depression. Can we talk about the casino and hospitality stocks for a second? US operations back to 2019 levels, if not higher, Macau operations at maybe 50% to 75% back, growth opportunities throughout Asia with whispers of different projects in the Middle East. This seems like a layup for the buy and hold investor with a lot of vertical business development. The ultra 1% gamblers are probably lost to secret Laoatian casinos where people can bet on gladiatorial death marches or play roulette with slaves as casino chips but the allure and luxury of Macau and Vegas have a total addressable market of 7+ billion people.

Generally you really only want 5-10 key ideas. Now, an idea can mean a single stock, a long/short pair trade, a basket of stocks targeting some theme, or if you're lazy an ETF tracking a similar basket that roughly encompasses your core focus of the idea.
Beyond that, some people leave a small percentage of their portfolio for some random side bets or tracking positions, just to sort of remind themselves of names they want to watch more closely.
Too much diversification and your returns start to just approximate the major indexes which defeats the purpose of putting in effort to pick names in the first place.

As for how to source ideas, you just have to spend time learning and looking around. A good starting point is to see what other successful people are doing. People being plural - don't just shadow one guy, even your friend.

>Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC posted a 23.3% fall in second-quarter net profit on Thursday as global economic woes dented demand for chips used in applications as varied as cars, cellphones and servers and coming off a strong period last year.

>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) , the world's largest contract chipmaker and a major Apple Inc supplier, saw April-June net profit drop to T$181.8 billion ($5.85 billion) from T$237.0 billion a year earlier.

>That compared with the T$172.55 billion average of 21 analyst estimates compiled by Refinitiv.

These faggots are actually undershooting the estimates by a wide margin so that they can cry

Oh and did I mention P/E of more than 200 and a terrible guidance?
Earnings are still mostly good and regularly beat expectations (mostly because they are artificially low, of course) but guidance is getting worse and worse... yet these fags keep slurping and keep buying.
I can understand bad earnings because of something something, but also bad guidance? And the stock just keeps surging? What is even going on?
There is no magical AI to help profits here. No, these are mostly industrial low P/E stocks

Can someone help me understand this.
So I often hear it was stupid for people to pull out during the 2008 crash. People say you should have kept in. Now I understand the concept of buying at that time being a great idea. However if you already had money in, it is a bit confusing.

So I get that you can't time the market, but if you stay in while it's that low, would it not take much longer for your money to actually get back to the point it was right before the crash started?

Like if I have $1000 thats been in there for 10 years, and the crash sends it to $100, it will take many years for it to even get back to $1000, would it not? Because you lost all the money in that period, it still has to grow back to where it was before you can even start seeing profit again. It's not just going to go back to $1000 the next year the market is up. For example each ongoing year it'd go from $100, to $400, to $800, to $1000 then you start profiting.

Am I wrong?

"Little has changed fundamentally. The increase in guidance is mostly due to changes in revenue recognition from fast shipment agreements, not due to a fundamental improvement in the company's prospects"
Is this a joke? They are maintaining solid growth and very nice profits despite these "high" rates while stocks like NVDA are down -40% in terms of profit compared to two years ago (don't even get me started on others like AMD, META, and Tesla)

All this time his money was doing nothing (except maybe dividends) and he must hope that the market goes high enough for breakeven or profit, or he gotta know when to take a loss and get out.

The problem isn't getting out, it's getting back in. I went all cash Feb of 2020. The market continued to rise, even though it was clear that covid was completely uncontained, and even if contained, Foxconn and several other CN manufacturers were down, or operating in a very limited manner. The crash was easy to see. But with bad news week after week, the dow dropping below 20,000, and a path below 15,000 was easy to see, where do you buy back in? On a pump that looses twice as much as the pump the following day? If I had DCA'd the way through, and not sold, when the dust settled, I'd have 25k more. Compound that for 20 years, and my balance at retirement would, conservatively be 100k more. Just because I wasn't a disciplined investor. In hindsight, I could have played it differently, but I didn't have the balls to do it. I didn't have the balls to buy when there was blood in the street.I told an older very intelligent, successful businessman that I had sold, and he told me that the problem was knowing when to get back in.

But had I played it perfectly, I'd be years closer to retirement right now...

DCA is dollar cost averaging. It just means keep buying, every month, every payday, whatever, just keep investing. Also you might want to read about Bob. It's a fabulous story about this. https://awealthofcommonsense.com/2014/02/worlds-worst-market-timer/
If I had stayed invested, my balance would have been (at least!) $25,000 more than by selling and sitting on the sidelines until I felt it was safer. By getting out, I missed out at buying the bottom (the recovery was very swift because of stimulus). And didn't get back in until it was above where I had sold. I still have 8% of my 401k in cash...waiting to buy "the dip". Read about Bob above. It's a great lesson to being an investor.

You’re not incorrect, but what you’re missing is what will happen if and when you lose your job. Having the stock market crash so you lose your liquid cash and then losing your job is devastating. That’s why so many people got hurt by 2008. Having your home value plummet, losing all of your money in the stock market, and then losing your job will set you back for years. As long as you keep your job, recessions aren’t too bad. I don’t think a lot of people will be unemployed in this recession because companies are still hurting for workers and we’ve been below the replacement rate for children since 2008, but we’ll have to see what happens

We moved from $444 to $438 SPY after 2yr crossed 5%, 10yr crossed 4% - the sell off was very broad, affecting all markets domestic and international
Then CPI came out a few days later, and people panic bought bonds, hardcore crushing yields
>yields pulled back only a little bit
Again, you're fucking retarded - the 2yr fell from 5% to 4.5% in 4 days. That is an extreme move. That isn't "only a little bit"
If yields continue to go up, past 5% 2yr, past 4% 10yr, we will have a systemic failure event. It's not "Oh, the economy is strong, therefore higher interest rates is okay!"
No. The banks will literally all fail if rates continue to go up unchecked.
>but, but, interest rates went up, and the market went up at the same time!! clearly the market doesn't care about interest rates!!!
The market cares about interest rates, retards. However, if we're not breaking out to new highs (bonds getting sold to new lows), then people are not as frightened. But if we break above 4%, 5% respectively, and bonds continue to sell off, THEN it causes the panic, and causes everyone to freak out and panic sell their equities
It is uncontrolled, unpredictable moves in bonds that the market hates. Yes it also hates higher yields.. but if higher yields happen in a rapid, unpredictable way, that is the worst possible scenario
