Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized P2P privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and fungible, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- In other words, the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a user willingly providing a view key.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptos. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of transactions increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier of entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward will gradually approach 0.6 XMR in June 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

STOP MINING IN MINEXMR
>START MINING IN P2POOL
STOP MINING IN MINEXMR
>START MINING IN P2POOL

P2Pool combines the advantages of pool and solo mining; you still fully control your Monero node and what it mines, but you get frequent payouts like on a regular pool.

P2Pool has no central server that can be shutdown/blocked because it uses a separate blockchain to merge mine with Monero. There's no pool admin that can control what your hashrate is used for or decide who can mine on the pool and who can't; It's permissionless!

Decentralized pool mining (P2Pool) is pretty much the ultimate way to secure a PoW coin against 51% attacks. When P2Pool reaches 51% of the total network hashrate, Monero will be essentially invulnerable to such attacks.

YOU CAN NOW MINE IN P2POOL DIRECTLY FROM THE MONERO GUI WALLET!

If you have a PC or laptop:

1. Download Monero GUI
https://i.imgur.com/ZGefPef.png

2. Pick 'Advanced' mode
https://i.imgur.com/4c0uSE4.png

3. Set up your wallet
https://i.imgur.com/4lMKh00.png

4. Keep the default Daemon settings "Start a node automatically in the background"
https://i.imgur.com/maACmmT.png

5. Once sync'd, go to Advanced->Mining and pick 'P2Pool'. If you have a laptop or low-end PC (~50 kH/s) pick "Mini" pool, else pick "Main"
https://i.imgur.com/E60JeMG.png

P2Pool-compatible remote nodes if you do not have your own local copy of the blockchain:

>p2pmd.xmrvsbeast.com - (Western Europe) (rpc-port 18081, zmq-port 18083)
>myxmr.net - (Northern Europe) (rpc-port 18081, zmq-port 18083)

OTHERWISE SWITCH TO A SMALLER POOL, IT TAKES YOU 30 SECONDS AND YOU CAN JUST SOURCE A DIFFERENT CONFIG FILE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO FUCK UP YOUR EXISTING ONE.

Many inexperienced miners think that big pools give better profits which is not the case. Your profits in the long run depend only on your hashrate, not on the pool's hashrate.

>The irrational exuberance of cryptocurrency investors

Irrational exuberance is characterized as a hype-fueled mania that causes investors to massively overestimate an asset's real-world value. In this delusional state, investors tend to become so smitten with expectations of greater profits that they disregard the assets’ potentially weak fundamentals and drink the proverbial Kool-Aid.

This then leads to them recklessly and repeatedly buying into whatever asset is currently rising in the charts, thereby triggering and/or sustaining an asset bubble. This bubble is kept inflated solely by the mass delusion that the market price is justified and will only keep going up in future, effectively becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Note that bubbles can last for years, especially in an age of easy investor on-boarding. However, when history inevitably repeats and the bubble bursts that optimism invariably turns into panic as the asset crashes back down to its real-world value.

In finance, the "greater fool theory" suggests that one can sometimes make money through the purchase of overvalued assets—items with a purchase price drastically exceeding the intrinsic value—if those assets can later be resold at an even higher price.

In this context, one "fool" might pay for an overpriced asset, hoping that he can sell it to an even "greater fool" and make a profit. This only works as long as there are enough new "greater fools" willing to pay higher and higher prices for the asset. Eventually, investors can no longer deny that the price is out of touch with reality, at which point a sell-off can cause the price to drop significantly until it is closer to its fair value, which in some cases could be zero.

This effect is often further exacerbated by herd mentality, whereby people hear stories of others who bought in early and made big profits, causing those who did not buy to feel a fear of missing out.

Anons, I need to tell you guys a story about my tryst with XMR.

Long read, so grab a drink and read through.

It was the year of our lord 2020, early spring...

Me was a 9gag fag for nearly 8 years. Was indeed aware of this dark and forbidden place called FoChang.. but had not dared to lurk close to it.

Around 2016 I had once encountered /lit/ board thanks to some plebbit comments. That was all the interactions I had with this god forsaken place.

WFH started and I stopped working and instead browsed random sites mindlessly throughout the day. Opened a dozen of trading accounts after I heard about the scheduled BRRRR. I always thought cryptographic coins are a scam, USD and God are eternal and Stock Market is how you beat financial hurricanes. /pol/ and /biz/ were fr MVPs those few months.

An acquintance visited me over a weekend, I was bragging about muh day trading shenanigans and he said "bruh, you heard of them cryptos?"

Uh yea, I had heard of them indeed. My cousin has been mining it for north of 4 years.. whatevs! they be useless said I. Importantly, I had heard of them on /biz/ - my new sweetheart.

Okay, I said, I need to buy me some cryptos.

I KYCd myself and created an account on a digital asset company with VISA debit card (Free ya'al) and I even bought bitcorns there. Only and only then I looked at its price evolution and boy did I curse myself!

I lurked more on /biz/ and fags used to yell "Not your keys, Not your crypto" in every bitcoin thread. Tha phuck is a key? I thought to myself. I looked up the DA company's subredit - boy was I in for a revealation. I lost just a couple of hundred bux, cuz the company went MIA.

Anons told me to create a paper wallet, buy bitcoins on Binance and send it to my paper wallet. The fuck is a private wallet?

Nyways, I discovered that there are like a billion coins on binance, which should I buy?

49252632

contd.

I lurked more and more on /biz/ and thought "my cousin MINES them, how bout I mine it as well?".

Mmediately, rented a VPS and decided to mine.

There are N-versions of the same coin.. The Fuck? I read more about BTC history, BCH fork and all the shit. I was convinced BSV is the real bitcoin and sucked Craig's cock for two long days. I decided to mine BSV through a mining pool.

I discovered there is something called 'Hash Rate' that decides how much coins you get. Mine was in KHs and the pool was in EHs.. that cannot be right. The software should have a typo in there, somewhere.

I then discovered something called ASIC which is like the ebil thing that centralizes mining. All bought and paid by the Cinese Communist Party.

That made me say, fuck it, I will just buy coins on binance. Again, I remembered that there are like a billion coins on binance, which should I buy?

I was sold on LINK, XRP, POLKA, ALGO, DOGE, ETH.. all those were capped in supply.
I did remember a frog wearing orange t-shirt that says 'XMR, didnt read, never selling'. I looked XMR up and it appeared to have an unlimited supply. No thanks I said.

This continued for about half an year.. I lurked more on /pol/ and learnt that, in future, cash would be digital and every transaction would be behaviourally analysed.

Hmmmm. I thought.. That looks bad.

So i went on /lit/ and asked "Do you have any books on how to live in a society where all financial transactions are known to the government."
The thread got 1 reply "Ask /biz/, but you probably have already asked there" and got banned for offtopic posting.

I continued buying more and more LINK, as I was sold on the esoteric aspects (I also discovered /x/ ya'al). And DOGE because Musk, and CARDANO because it is future (or something).

contd.

One fine evening I came across picrel.

Da fuck is a monero? and what is atomic swap? , I only know cum swap.

For some reason "2011 Whale wallets moving" resonated with me.

I bought 100 euros worth of monero.

Learnt more about privacy.. HOLY FUCK! THIS IS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!

I studied more, bought 500 euros worth of monero.

I studied more, started buying 500 euros of monero every month (along with other cryptos).

I studied more, started buying 500 bux monero every month.

I studied more, sold every other crypto and bought monero, this time on localmonero.

Decided to mine monero as well! the fuck when the total has rate is so low! IMGMI!

I studied more about ASIC resistance, stopped ETF buying and instead bought monero.

Started mining XMR on my VPS using minexmr (obviously).

I studied more, diverted my weekly swiss hooker procurement funds to buying XMR.

Studied more and more and more thanks to /biz/... about finance, kikery, history, macro, micro, inflation... you name it.

More than half my NW is in Monero lads.

I do not care to be rich. I just want to buy organic butter, fresh veggies, small parcel of land in rural area, flourideless water, grass fed meat, organic eggs and 20 year old bony tall girls without the government-kike poking it's long nose into my business.

I do not care to be rich, I just want to be left to my own, I have never harmed anyone, I will not harm anyone.. I just want to persue my interests without someone stealing my labor or cheating me of my fruits.

I cancelled my VPS subscription today. From today, I will neither be mining nor be buying monero.
I have bought and mined enough for my heart and gut's content.

For all it is worth, I will lurk this general once in a while...

And all my moneros, for the record, were lost in a boating accident, it was more painful than holocaust.

Why don't the feds just say that they've cracked monero to increase the FUD? Or whenever a DNM vendor/operator gets arrested, put it in the report that they used their secret monero tracking technique to nail them? I'd imagine that if people googled "monero" and got nothing but news results that FUDs the coin then people would be less interested in buying, no?

At this point they're either massively underestimating monero's potential, or they must have something else cooking.

Like any other tool whose aim is to give more freedom and independence to the average citizen, and to remove power from those in control and at the top of society, publicity is a double-edged sword.
At the same time that publicity will make more people find this tool and take advantage of the financial freedom it offers... it will cause governments to try to limit its proliferation and use by whatever method they deem necessary.
Governments already know that Monero exists. And they certainly know that countries like North Korea mine and use Monero. It is already on their radar. They don't talk about it or announce a ban because that would be massive publicity for Monero, and with the current amount of people who hate their governments, such announce would be enough to make thousands of people install and use Monero overnight.
Pic related: if you dislike your government you are the bad actor.

Calm down.
One cannot control what others like/dislike and what they do with it. And that's a lot of lame, average, suspicious, or degenerate stuff across the net. People will promote what they like, and there's nothing one can do to stop it. The cat is way out of the bag at this point. You know this unless you woke up yesterday.
So, if X government wants to ban, prosecute and criminalize Monero and its advocates, because that alone makes them "bad actors", then they better start banning a thousand other things (expected or unexpected) that one could resort to become a bad actor, and the list is fucking huge.
At this point you would be talking about establishing a global communist dictatorial regime so bloodthirsty that compared to it, Holodormor will look like a trip to disneyland.
There, money will be the last of our concerns.

Do I sound anxious or something? I feel pretty calm.
I'm just arguing that advertising monero has both a good and a bad side. It's not unrealistic to argue that governments would like people to not know about and to not use monero, on the other hand the government itself uses monero to bait spies.

>if X government wants to ban, prosecute and criminalize Monero and its advocates
I don't think this is very realistic. Likely they would just ban exchanges from trading it and commerce from accepting it as a currency. I think they will hold from enacting this as much as they can because the moment they do it many people who have never heard of Monero will start to pay attention and research it.

Drugs are spread to weaken society.
Monero is used to strengthen society.
They have completely different outcomes in individual impact. If you want to use a slightly better analogy, make the comparison with firearms that similarly to sound money also provide you with greater freedom. In countries where you can get one, there is constant pressure to ban guns, and in the rest of the world firearms are banned for ordinary citizens while governments have a monopoly on manufacture and use. Something similar could happen with monero.

Any anons smart about using tor? So I am trying to run my full node thru tor. I finally figured out how to do monerod thru command line. But I’m struggling to get the node to run thru tor. I open the directory that monerod is in, and type ./monerod —tx-proxy 127.0.0.1:9050 but it just gives me “E exception in main! Failed to initialize p2p server.” I look at a bunch of instructions on monero website and shit to make it work. Tells me to go into directory and modify a bunch of shit. I downloaded TOR one time via command line. And it tells me on monero website to modify a file called etc/torrc or something. That directory doesn’t exist. But I did find a blank torrc file browsing around. Put in the hidden services and ports on the blank file. Changes nothing. Following the instructions on getmonero.org, I am stopped at the point where you type “sudo systemctl status tor@default.service” because the program in command line stops at “end” but when I click out of program it says it’s still running? Did it even do anything. When I type “sudo cat /var/lib/tor/monero-service/hostname” it says directory doesn’t exist. I use Ubuntu. For some reason my directory’s for all my programs become a mess for no reason. I’m an old fucking boomer. Used windows till a few months ago.

What OS Are you using? If you install the tor package on basically any linux distro it will automatically make /var/lib/tor/* and /etc/tor

All you're doing is editing tor's config file to let it know you're running a hidden service, then editing moneros config file (or using command line options) to tell monerod to send data through that port.

if I'm correct tor open nodes will require seed nodes as well

Monero is such a black box compared to other cryptocurrencies as well. You can really only gather data from exchanges and markets that are willing to be transparent about monero transactions. We don't know how many whales there are, what percentage of total monero they own, when and how that monero is moving, which wallets are dormant, etc. Monero may actually be much more scarce than we realize, especially if there are wealthy oligarchs/politicians/druglords that are slowly accumulating. With a market cap of ~$3.5B, some serious money that flows into there could buy a pretty thick slice of that pie. Even if monero has lifelong tail emission, it cannot hold onto that $170-320 price forever.

Aren't we supposed to be getting public view keys eventually? Exchanges demonstrating how much XMR they have (minimum) would be a big deal.

Otherwise no public view keys prevents XMR from being used as an asset or collaterol.

Purely private ledger is the one aspect of crypto's original philosophy that XMR has fallen short. Namely, that ANYONE using crypto as an asset against count-party positions actually had what they claimed to. That it would work against fractional reserve lending.

I'm almost incredulous XMR isn't MORE embraced by banks for the simple reason it is one of few (any) cryptos they can fractional reserve, but I suspect they are more upset with the idea that ANYONE could do the same and take advantage of the gravy train of bullshit.

Buy/sell goods and services from friends and family p2p. Buy things from Russia, fuck sanctions. Buy coffee(there’s a dealer of beans and you can scan QR code to donate XMR directly to Colombian farmers), buy precious metals from veldt gold dot com. You can get in a conversation with your waiter/tress or bartender convince em to download cake wallet real quick so you can tip in XMR. You can pay a psychiatrist in XMR(monerica dot com). Massively used in the darknet for drugs and stuff as you mentioned, but you know there’s a lot more crime going on than drugs, and it’s literally the number one currency in that area outside cold hard cash(if crooks use it, that means it must be a damn good product unfortunately bad people will reap the benefits of a good product just as well as you can). You can donate XMR to certain people like Andrew Anglin without getting your bank account frozen. And If boomers like Jared Taylor or Stephen molyneux ever get on the monero bandwagon you can donate to them as well with zero risk of being exposed by the lefty media and cancelled by the bank cartels. Now this is a very serious dont fucking do it…. But you could keep most of your savings in monero before you get married you chauvinistic bastard. Then when your divorced she can’t grab any of it. And your looking at some serious time in pound me in the ass prison so don’t do it. Not to mention that’s just a disgusting act. Almost worse than money laundering and tax evasion. For example:
Exchange with XMR > subaddress 1 XMR wallet Same Exchange with XMR > subaddress 2 (Same XMR wallet)
Same Exchange with XMR > subaddress 3 (Same XMR wallet)

Or is it better to just use one sub address per exchange since it is derived from the same seed phase?

Is it easier for an exchange to track you with one address or multiple from the same seed? Assuming it has one been "churn" once? Or is it untraceable regardless?

You're right. Normies probably wont care about monero unless it's the most convenient choice because that's just what they do with everything. That being said though that would make any cryptocurrency viable to be used by normies so long as it becomes the convenient crypto. The people who do care about privacy which is still a good a good amount of people will be the ones responsible for propelling monero to that level of convenience.

With the way things are going, these normies will be sorry. The moon fagging is distracting the sheep from the real value of the cryptocurrency which is privacy. Now if you wanna be somewhat of a moon fag about it, maybe present it to a moon fag this way:
Privacy will become gold in the 4th industrial revolution cyberpunk dystopia. What is really going to “moon” in value more than anything is privacy, of any kind. Monero is a piece to the picture, along with tor/tails/i2p/linux and abandoning windows. Keeping social media presence to a minimum or not at all, the data collection being done on you will bite you in the ass someday. All this + monero will secure you in the future. Don’t measure your quality of life and your assets in USD. Measure them it all in how much privacy you have from (((them))).

The moonfagging is really getting out of hand at this point. Over the course of the luna crash I took a trip to the cryptocurrency reddit to get some free lols and they were actively calling for regulation. Posts getting massive amounts of upvotes saying "Regulation is a sign of a maturing market". Crypto isn't what it once was and the moonfags need to die out they only care about number go up and it makes me want to sell everything. Luckily monero is very against moon fags. Keep up the good fight with the gate keeping bros, bully all moonfags.

No. It doesn't change anything. Addresses do not show up in the blockchain.
The only difference is from a perspective standpoint, but it doesn't make your monero more or less traceable. If you're always withdrawing to the same address the exchange knows you're sending it all to the same place, if you're using different addresses they can't know if you're paying different people or withdrawing to different wallets you own.

So it's about market.
Now ask yourself the following question: is there one or more group of people who require absolute financial privacy? Are the wealthy people out there who wants to hide their money? How much money is moved every year through grey and black markets? What about tax havens?
Are these people more likely to use bitcoin or something else to hide their money?
You don't need to worry about normies.

autistic question..

Buying xmr through localmonero with a cardless cash withdrawal (go to ATM with numerical code, and withdraw predetermined amount) has been my go to for a while. However, I think there is the potential for the bank to put 2 and 2 together and realise that you aren't the one withdrawing that money from different locations every month, and get suspicious. Cash in person is obviously the best for anonymity, but is difficult because the other person needs to not be sketchy/ a fed. How could one go about buying monero completely privately and anonymously? or at least in the most private & anonymous way?

How many customers do your bank have? If the number is in the millions, do you really believe they could have that kind of insight? Be reasonable and think it through before answering.

No such thing as 100% anonymity. Cash for the last hundreds thousands of years was anonymous as fuck so long as you traded peer to peer. I’d say the best ways to be really really fucking secretive about it is to use a pic of a gift card+receipt to someone on local monero. Ultimate best and most secret is cash via mail. Could you be giving the shit to a fed? You most certainly could be. So I wouldn’t just trade with one single dealer too much. Even if a fed is starting to try to track you, well… you got monero, something they cannot trace. What are they gonna do in court? Say “oh yea uhh I sold this man a few hundred dollars worth of monero via cash thru mail. While I was undercover on local monero. So he owes AT LEAST that much in taxes.. oh but we can’t really prove he’s sold his monero for a gain because. We don’t know what he’s been doing with it, or how much he stack doing other things, or if he bartered it off in person for other valuables. Hell we don’t even know his balance”
I really don’t worry at all that a fed is buying or selling me monero at the end of the day. I hope they keep doing business with me in fact. I might be a little worried if I was actually part of the cartel or something but even then I’d feel safer with monero than cash, bank money wire, etc. Monero ends the fed. Better than silver does.

This has always been weird to me. For a currency that's used so much you would think it would naturally rise in market cap. I like to think there is some guy out there who found out how to print monero and is selling it for around $200 and just keeps making money. But in reality It's probably due to regulation fears.

It’s an interesting question. I haven’t been follow how well that’s been working out there. Even in El Salvador I’d probably avoid shitcoin as much as possible. Shit coin is just not fungible. Period. Nowhere in the world is it fungible or really truly private unless you take a bunch of extra steps and even then it’s still an open public ledger where all wallet addresses and balances are easily seeable. It’s probably functioning there exactly like CBDC’s will work. Maybe it’s the testing ground for implementing CBDC and shitcoin is gonna be the prototype.

>Right now monero's fees are like 0.001 usd but it seems if monero was 30k like btc then the fees would be the same?
Nope. Monero has low fees due to using a dynamic block size. It's also a lesser known feature of Monero that fees actually go down the more people use it, as min. fee per transaction is a function of block reward / block size, meaning that as Monero gets bigger blocks due to usage it actually drops fees in XMR. Since we would assume that a large increase in transactions is likely going to correlate in higher XMR values, by requiring less XMR per transaction in fees actually means that it stays affordable to transact with even with much higher use.

You could still see fees go up in real terms though if you saw massive price increases without the corresponding volume of transactions pushing block size up.

I just re-watched the franchise because I remember watching the first three movies when I was a teen and just wanted to get a better grip on the story. It's basically a MKUltra subject gone rogue versus the CIA. The first couple movies are good if you like the genre. The last few are just more of the same so it's boring and predictable. Anyway I wonder if Hollywood will still produce movies where glowniggers are the baddies. Hopefully.
