I never understood why you don't just buy a few total market funds. The "3 fund portfolio" will cover everything your 45 funds own (unless you made the mistake of owning foreign bonds in which case 4 funds would do the trick) with far less hassle/paperwork/costs and much easier maintenance.

Why own 45 funds over a standard 3 or 4 fund total market portfolio?

>> No.978749

>>978748
It's not a gamble if you do your research and pick companies with consistent cash flow and revenue growth as well as a keen understanding of their pipeline technology and what it means for the market. Investing is never about gambling, you cover your risk by doing arduous research and setting firm stop loss rules. For biotech for example you'd need to understand uni level biology and finance. Basically insider knowledge into the products is paramount in the small cap game. Also understanding news catalysts for your company, and how to differentiate between white noise news and something of value. It's really not that difficult, although I personally avoid the otc. Anything too unregulated is dangerous. Stick with "penny" stocks in the 2-$5 range. Diversifying under 100k only limits profit potential, strict stop loss rules and bone crushing research prior to buying can be very profitable.

But what about risk?

If it is so easy, why isn't everyone doing it?

And if it is so easy, wouldn't that already reflect on the price (efficient market hypothesis).

Unless your country is doing denationalisation and you can buy state company stocks for pennies (like many did in Russia, Eastern Europe, China), I don't think you are getting rich via it anytime soon.

What is your EDGE? What is your advantage over the market overall?

>> No.978758

>>978754
Efficient market hypothesis is false. It's made by prof plebs that can't do well in investing because they're too focused on theory>practical analysis. My edge is unconventional forms of research. Getting to know management, gathering snippets of info that could be deemed questionable from them. Basically you gain an edge when you do the opposite of what most retailers are doing. The stuff they teach in financial econ courses is pseudoscience nonsense. Efficient market hypothesis is literally psyche babble crap. Humans are irrational and emotional, price does not reflect information, rather it reflects emotional post information reaction, which cannot be quantified in any way in the short term. This is why worthless companies like KBIO were pumped up by that kek Shkreli so successfully. Only brainwashed finance undergrads buy into EMH. Everyone does what everyone else does, their hoarding mentality is your profit opportunity, all you need to do is realize that 90% of them lose money, thus you mostly do the opposite of what they're doing to succeed.

>> No.978760

>>978749
>Basically insider knowledge into the products is paramount in the small cap game.

Yeah, of course insider info will give you the edge, but how the fuck does a normal person get that info? If it is publicly available on Google, the market knows it and it reflects in the price, does it not?

>> No.978761

>>978758
>Efficient market hypothesis is false.

There are 3 variations of the hypothesis, the hard one (fully efficient) is false, but otherwise, the market is more or less semi-efficient. Which means that beating it is HARD and you have to have shit load of edge over competition.

>> No.978767

Talk to management and interpret their language. Smaller cap companies don't have as much oversight, they will often release insider snippets that are coded in legal jargon.
