Let me tell you hwat I started smoking Marlboro reds when they were like $7 a pack (this is in CT) and by the time I was good and addicted the price had jumped to $10 in most stores around me.

Cigarettes are an outlier example of how this kind of tactic can actually benefit people, because I've quit.

It’s more like
We have a government partly funded healthcare system and you’re a god damn border and don’t contribute enough.

Removing smokers or obese people from public healthcare is extremely
Complicated both legally and logistically is easier to tax these extremely u healthy vices.
While I’m not with sugar tax and shit like that because you can perfectly enjoy a treat once in a while without causing considerable harm to your health, smoking is just plain horrible and while u have every right to do whatever u want, I don’t want to pay for your increased cost when you require treatment, it’s been proven over and over again smoking increased the possibility of cancer, makes any surgery and sickness far more complicated the older u get and far more expensive etc, requires far more care than non smokers and just plan more expensive and you should pay for that and the best way to make u pay is by charging it on top of the price of cigarettes, in fact right now in Australia the price doesn’t cover the real burden of smokers on tax payers.
It should be about 60% higher in Sydney and Melbourne.

Read the article - direct costs at the time the article was written was $318.4m ($450m if including bushfire control).

All the other 'costs' beyond that point are 'social costs' as measured by sjw.

Tobacco taxes account for revenue equivalent to mining royalties. ~18% of the population, being smokers, pay ~15x more towards healthcare than non-smokers.

We're the leeches, non-smokers that is, however we want to roll the facts.

iPhone autocorrect is quite annoying.

The argument is simple, smokers are a burden to public funded healthcare the the tax on cigarettes partly covers the cost.
I’m ok with people doing whatever they want just not whole leeching off my tax money.
For healthcare Smokers are far more expensive on average that non smokers, it’s been proven again and again that smoking increases the risk of developing or contracting serious and expensive diseases, increases the risk of cancer and makes treatment far more difficult and only gets worse with age.
If there was a way to remove smokers, the obese and anyone who willingly engages in activities that greatly deteriorate their health from public healthcare then that would be the fair way to reduce to price of cigarettes.

Tldr I don’t want to pay for your degeneracy, cigarettes should cost more to cover to damage you cause to public healthcare and the Australian economy

The reality is quite different that’s why everywhere smokers are bashed.
My workplace alone smokers take 2-3 15 minutes break a day I don’t care, but god damn how addicted and dependent on something you have to be to absolutely need to smoke 2-3 times during an 8 hours shift, I see smokers constantly needing a cigarette when they’re dealing with stressful situations, that’s pathetic.

You don't get it do you? We already do tax them far beyond their cost to healthcare. Currently, we cannot do without the revenue their addiction raises.
The writing is 'on the wall' however - as I see it, the rumbling about a sugar tax is a de facto discussion about the imminent and rapid decline of tobacco revenue that will occur once safer nicotine source alternatives such as vaping are 'formally' allowed. I agree with this too, my great grandmother lived to 88 and smoked/ drank like a fucking trooper till she passed. All my grandparents and their siblings smoked for decades, one still does. No cancer and theyre all entering their 70s. My grandfather did have a minor stroke last year though, hes fine.

My partners grandmother just retired last year and was diagnosed with cancer less than a year later, shes still undergoing treatment. Never smoked in her life.

One of my good mates came down with the cancer, (never smoked either) a few years back and was fine 6 months later.

Please do not reproduce I guess I won’t have to worry about that since smoking decreases sperm count and activity.
You’re free to do whatever you want I don’t care about discussing whether it’s good for you or not I don’t care about you, you’re a retard I don’t even think about you. My issue that statistically smokers cost more to the healthcare system than not smokers and that’s a fact. If you were passing a budget in the legislature and you need to find new ways to generate revenue, it makes sense to tax something like tobacco. It provides literally no benefits to society or the smokers themselves other than the physical/social satisfaction they get from them which is countered twofold by science that proves it's actually bad for them. If they want to pay more to hurt themselves (and the environment, smokers literally pitch butts everywhere) the government will tax them more and take that money for something more useful, like school budgets and infrastructure. It's not that hard to figure out. If you smoke you're aware it's bad for you but maybe you don't stop anyway.

>stats focus on underage people

this entire document is fucked. It even states youre more likely to smoke if youre poor, unemployed or indigenous, yet they continue to fuck the shit out of us with taxes.

I wont deny that there is a clear decline in smokers but why would they use stats gathered prior to the implementation of the disgusting extortion tactics the government currently uses. The decline that their stats are showing is fucking insignificant compared to how much they have raised the price of tobacco products. If prices were what they were 10 years ago I would be over 100 dollars a week better off, thats 3 years of pay rises for me.

Also, tobacco sales increased in Q4 last year for the first time in years, despite cigarettes costing more than ever before.

Hence why I said earlier it was very complicated and it was easier to just tax cigarettes.
I don’t have the statistics regarding extreme sports etc, I do for smoking and it’s an activity that is detrimental for the health of anyone who engages in it and greatly increases the cost of providing medical services to that person, on average smokers are more expensive to treat than non smoker.
