Thomas' latest Chainlink node setup guide is pretty straightforward. Would it simply be a case of setting up a linux machine on a VPS, following those instructions, then letting it run?
Also, do we have any information yet about how individual nodes are actually going to be assigned jobs? The early idea was that you would have to manually connect your node to say "American Football" data sources and then you would be part of the pool of nodes that fetched that information specifically. Or do nodes just sit there waiting for any request and then they go and track down that information? And if it's the latter, why wouldn't you just spam nodes by following these instructions over and over again and knocking up hundreds of them?

You need to have a collateral to run a node. Sure you could just aswell use Ethereum, but then the Chainlink token would be useless, so they made it mandatory to stake link in the node.

Because the Link cubes have to do something. I just received mine in the mail, and holy shit. I didn't realize they actually sent little plastic link cubes once you buy it. I now have 30000 of these little fuckers, boxes wall to wall, filled with these little plastic shits. After doing some research you apparently have to take the cubes to a little office to "stake" them (one will be opening in my city come "mainnet") Basically you just leave them the boxes full of cubes and they'll mail you your "returns" of more cubes over time. I asked Rory WTF was up, and he said that the team was going along with Sergey's delusion so he doesn't snap. He also told me that 22 of the 32 million was spent on these little cubes. The team was obviously getting paid out the ass, so they went along with it and make fake github commits to keep the delusion going. Now all I have are these fucking cubes, and I can't even take them to the dump because they would charge a fortune. Tl;dr don't buy Link

You cannot use Etheteum because link has a special function called TransferAndCall. Link is the only ERC677 token that I know of.

Also Ethereum will not be the only blockchain Link uses.

Pretty sure this is false. Nodes don't need to have any Link, they just can't accepts JOBS THAT REQUIRE collateral if they don't.

the price of link also needs to be independent of eth since it is blockchain agnostic. it makes no sense for node rewards to go up or down based on shit that happens outside the chainlink network.

Don't you have to buy a LInkminer to be able to run a node? I heard they cost 10btc or something crazy like that.

let's say chainlink mainnet goes live and link is running on all these other blockchains and then suddenly ethereum just vanishes, doesn't exist anymore. what happens to chainlink? can it still function?

Link does not need Ethereum, it is blockchain agnostic. So if EOS would replace ETH you can just build the CL adapters for Eos then.

Most tokens are like that. Many of these solutions could be done without the currency. That's why big corporations forgo the token and just use the decentralized ledger built on ethereum.

Go look at Toastycoin. It is a burnable payments smart contract UI. It works. It is free. It runs native off ethereum. One guy built it in his free time.

Now ask yourself why anyone would use chainlink when they could hire some top brass to build themselves a native solution. I'm sorry but link is unironically a meme and nothing more. Sergey is good at raising money and that is about it.

Chainlink is middleware, right now they are working on Ethereum but the project is basically blockchain agnostic. If Ethereum goes to shit the team still has plans to adapt it to Hyperledger and Bitcoin (with the possibility of other blockchains).
