He abandoned his last project mostly due to regulations, but also to pursue Chainlink. Even when he was running SAE, he was describing Chainlink in interviews. Once regulatory issues made it clear SAE as it was developed for NXT wasn't going to be feasible, Sergey and Steve pivoted the tech they'd created for SAE and started developing Chainlink from it seeing that it would solve far more problems for the industry than they'd originally set out to.

Chainlink is Sergey's dream. Its his vision to see it come to market. Even when he was working on his last project, he was pining for Chainlink to exist. When you want something to exist that doesn't exist, and you see its potential to transform everything around you if it succeeds, you don't give up on that. Sergey isn't a project abandoner at all. He just found a much more significant project that's more important to him.
