Boys boys is bitcoin painting a bull flag as we speak? This looks like it could get nasty.

Coming from someone who's always bullish I see it crashing first. If it was going to pump for consensus we would have seen it by now. At best I see it going sideways

What does this even mean? The time to correct difficulty is taking longer and longer eventually becoming infinite?

Bingo. Because it's losing hashrate so fast it can't complete the 2016 block group. It will snowball and the chain will freeze permanently as long as that graph remains trending upwards instead of down.
This is the end. Technical end. Not market driven hype stupidity human opinion end.

supposedly, they can't do anything without looking like two-faced liars. And, apparently, if they look like two-faced liars, the faith in btc crumbles... it's a lose lose situation.

Yes.
There's nothing they can do. Trying to get a hard fork is politically impossible(opposed by the exact parties in control of core that hijacked the chain for their own ends alone), but even ignoring that political impossibility and assuming you could force them to make the sensible change, you know who actually implements the sensible change? The miners core just spent over three years demonizing and commanding that they fall in line with core's 1mb4eva scaling plan.
Now all those miners have up do is earnestly point out this is what they wanted and there's no consensus on a change, as proven by over three years of core machiavellian political wrangling in the space to make it utterly useless for actually planning and executing anything sensible.
And in the ensuing nine months since the fork, smart miners have been mining btc and liquidating immediately for an even larger stake in bch, meaning they actually directly financially benefit from telling coretards to go fuck themselves.
The poetic justice is beautiful.
