Essentially, it allows blockchains that were originally built to be exclusionary to work together with each other - you can write programs involving two parties that use completely different cryptocurrencies on different blockchains and transfer them without any change of value.

For instance, right now everyone running ether dApps have to be using ethereum tokens. If someone wants to write dapp that involves a party that doesn't have the ethereum tokens for whatever reason, it can still work as long as they have a crypto. You could say it links everything together into one big blockchain, and it does it much better than any of the other projects claiming to do something similar. The potential is enormous.

Also to add, AION is a terrible investment due to the massive MASSIVE inflation from the TRS. There will be massive inflation until November, then continued but less inflation for the next 2 years since tokens are released to founders over the next 2-3 years which started from last year.
