My personal 'vetting' process for friends is I tell them like 3 books to read, if they read them, I will tell them shit. So far only 1 person has read 3/4 of 1 book. The people who ask you for help with money need you to not help them, guide them to information that helps them or things you've done that help, but you can't coddle them. If they pass your 'vetting' process, by all means, let them in, but don't have high hopes for your friends. The reason you like anyone gets rich is a combination of intuition, intelligence & straight up balls. You can't 'give' those things to someone else, they need to look withing to find those qualities for themselves,

There's a reason why wealthy people get wealthy friends, because when your friends all have money, you never have to wonder is person x just working / using me. I've had multiple 'friends' who all want me to invest in their businesses, which are not so much businesses as ideas bouncing around in their heads, and then when I go ok,create a written proposal, do the fucking work, it's months with nothing, or worse, I give them some constructive feedback & they throw a tantrum. I keep business / personal separate now, I don't even talk about money with my friends who aren't wealthy, like I pick up the tab & shit like that, but I don't actively talk about what I'm doing unless they're on the same level, it severely unbalances things.

Exact same scenario happened to me.
It happened in two separate waves.

I appeared in a local business magazine and was asked to give a talk at my university by one of my former professors. I had only finished my studies 3 years before then, so the master's students i was standing in front of actually remembered seeing me at their uni. After that, i got LOTS of people contacting me through facebook, which i don't actually use.

Then the second wave was much less pleasant... People BEGGING me for money. Sob story emails, etc... Even at my info@companyname.com, which my secretary reads as well.
I even had to call the cops on a woman who squeezed through the hedge.
