They get paid far under minimum wage because the restaurants are allowed to assume they earn a certain amount in tips.

They don't deserve "extra", your tip is necessary for them to meet that "expected minimum".

HOWEVER.

It's fucking wrong that the restaurants fuck us by passing the cost of employment to the customer and the servers by paying them $2.30/hr. The only solution is to stop tipping until serving becomes completely non-viable as even a part-time high school job. i used to work at a restaurant in a wealthy "urban village" in a large city on the east coast. politicians, celebrities, fortune 500 ceos, doctors, lawyers, and executives were the norm during peak hours on a friday or saturday

working in a place like that for enough time, you got good at reading people. you could tell who was going to be a shitty customer before they walked in the door.

the wealthy usually tipped generously if you gave them the service they were expecting. if you were good, they would come to request you every time. they most certainly did not skim on tips like some of the anons in here claim as it would be an embarrassment for them to do that when surrounded by their peers. corporate whites usually tipped 10-25%. jews tipped fairly. blacks were a wildcard. if they were trying to show off, they tipped really nice. not many hispanics in the area.

the ones who did not tip
>hood niggers
>groups of women with tipping calculators >europeans playing dumb
>pajeets.. especially pajeets (and pakis)

the more they run you around and ask you absurd requests, the shittier they will tip.

in all fairness, euro customers were usually nice. they typically did not tip, but they didn't ask for much either.

i quit that job 4 years ago. i had a brief stint at a country club where i got a real hourly wage + tips but eventually got sick of running around for drunk boomers

restaurant life is a roller coaster. you can make a lot of money, make a lot of connections, fuck college waitresses on the side, but it is stressful as fuck and somewhat grimy, shallow, and toxic.. especially back of house. im glad i got the hell out when i did. working with the public gets very tiresome.

to the anons in this thread who aren't larping and actually fuck over waitstaff, they will remember you. they know every corner of that place. they see it you will be loathed. i never tampered with food myself, but.. you're not doing yourself any favors

I'd also like to add that eating out at a restaurant is a social event for families, friends, couples, business functions. These are not places frequented by autistic NEETs, so I'm guessing that the people who aren't LARPing in this thread think they are cunning and edgy for going into a restaurant alone and then fucking over the old lady who waits at Denny's, IHOP, or Olive Garden. Well depends on how upscale the establishment is, but a waiter needs proper time managment skills in order to anticipate needs in proper order of the 5 or 6 tables they are tending too, excellent social skills to naturally engage with customers as welcomed friend(boomers like when you talk to them, but not too much) extensive knowledge of the menu and alcohol, decent memory under stress, thick skin for the guests who will be difficult because they its practically their right sadly, multi-tasking in general, and doing everything with 100% accuracy the first time around because fixing mistakes kills you during a rush, using proper and specific language, being attractive or well kempt or at least appealing to the all the senses as much as possible. Its definitely an art and the pay varies tons between people even at the same business. Trust me you will know the difference once you have an excellent server. Those people literally make customers come back sometimes regardless of the quality of the product that is being sold.

20% is crazy if you're eating at a nice place. Lets say I go out to a place and the bill comes up to $200 for a couple hours of eating and drinking with my girl. We're not paying $40 because that would mean I'm paying $20 an hour ON TOP of their base pay... and I'm not their only patron, which means they're making at least $60 an hour on tips alone. Is their work worth $60 an hour? No, because people with educations fight over jobs that pay 20 an hour. Do the 5-10% on expensive meals and 15% on cheap ones and go.

>> No.9239619

I was paid like 3$ an hour, (just enough for the government to take it all)

some nights walk home with only 5$ and the meal I got for half price after work covered. Some nights with like 90$ from like 8 tables. 18-19 at the time (21atm) couldn't afford to pay my lights, power gets shut off, already walking to work since my motorcycle broke. (2miles lucky I know)

I ended up having to quit because of reasons I don't feel comfortable saying here. But it was paradise in a way and I don't think I would trade a single second of it.
