Okay /biz/, instead of trading, why dont you just learn to bet on sports?

It's similar but much easier once you know how.

Maybe it's a chess tournament or whatever.

I'd love to learn, but I'm not interested in sports, nor do I like the odds generally given to players. Maybe we should start a /biz/ thread like the one on /sp/, sports betting. But that kind of thread requires at least one tripfag who knows what he does (i.e. is right often enough that people can follow him without failing/grow the thread).

The computer would burn up when near the sun and lions are incapable of using a computer. Furthermore a trillion lions would need to sync their decisions in tandem, because otherwise it wouldn't work. Besides the lions would crowd eachither out of the computer.

Or buy shares in bettors like paddy power.

Guaranteed to print money

which isn't going to happen - there are small edges in the competitive sports markets, people make a few percent ROI at best - it isn't just having a good model either, tis also getting the best prices you can - no one who actually has an edge has any incentive to share

the other way to make money is trading the movement in odds on exchanges like betfair... and again no one has any incentive to share there either. People giving 'tips' are either trying to sell a service because they can't make any money or are just deluding themselves.

the other thing to consider is that any liquid markets are already dominated by people with more resources that you'll have. Football (soccer) betting is dominated by a billionaire who employs a whole bunch of statisticians, bet places, football watchers etc.. you might find a mis-pricing on a small match at some bookie where you can't get much money down but don't expect to find any large inefficiencies in the market as there are people out there with much more resources than you - if you get anywhere near creating a decent model you're better off approaching him for a job

Absolutely awesome idea! Im think about see if I can throw ~250$ at a Bitcoin wallet (testing the waters at investing in bitcoin) and also use that to bet on sports with the help of /biz/ /sp/ and bar buddies. I'm not into sports at all so I can't fall into emotional team betting. MMA would be different thou. I'll think of how I can best keep track and update. I'll post my thoughts on Friday

No amount of lions are that smart.

I have taken $750 and turned it into $2200 on Bovada. I've only placed 3 bets but those 3 bets were about as close as it gets to a sure thing. Every weekend I look over the the football odds. There's always a number of games I like but I'm not putting money down until I'm absolutely confidence it's a win. I could bet smaller amounts and more often but then I'm just gambling.

>> No.917856

>>917571

no but the most successful ones do.. plenty of smaller betters doing line shopping or betting based on years of knowledge/experience

however if you think there is a large edge in the most liquid betting markets for major sports then you're the one who is clueless - aside from insider information there isn't... if you don't understand why that is then again you're clueless (and also innumerate)

>why dont you just learn to bet on sports?

Because:

1. Bookmakers have greater expertise and better access to information
2. Using this expertise and information, bookmakers will only offer prices that on average will be profitable for them.

So unless you've got access to information which the bookies don't, then on average you're going to make a loss from gambling.
It's pretty fucking simple.

The only real way to make money from gambling is through arbitrage, but you're barely ever going to find any real arbitrage opportunities nowadays.

>The only real way to make money from gambling is through arbitrage,

no that ins't the only way, the biggest sports betters have good handicapping models

Tony bloom is a billionaire and made it from being a good soccer handicapper - he employs teams of statisticians.

Billy Walters bets on US sports and is worth a few hundred million at least - also a handicapper.

Ditto to Bill Benter - another handicapper - HK horse racing, worth a couple of hundred million.

They've also got plenty of competitors - there are a couple of other football syndicates out there to rival bloom's one of them set up by a former employee of his.
