The only point of these stupid maths problems is for normies trying to pretend they're smart because they remember pedmas/bedmas. Nobody in the real world of math tries to write an equation with convolution because math is about simplifying the world around us. Equation would actually be written as input in pic related.

Thing is if you wrote a/bc in a single line on a maths/physics paper where a, b, c are constants, it would actually imply a/(b*c) because if a/b*c=ac/b was my intent then I would have actually wrote ac/b instead.

Hey, actually my autism kicked in, and it turns out, we're both right, it just depends on how you interpret the parenthesis.

https://mindyourdecisions.com/blog/2016/08/31/what-is-6%C3%B7212-the-correct-answer-explained/

So we can all agree you can simplify to this:
6÷2(1+2)
= 6÷2(3)

The debate starts over the order of precedence between multiplying and dividing.

Modern usage, apparently you go through operation from the left side of the operation to the right. Yielding (6/2)*3=9

However, old usage has it that, historically, the symbol ÷ was used to mean you should divide by the entire product on the right of the symbol (see longer explanation below).

So in old usage, the equation would equal 6/(2*3)=1

So really, OP is a fag for posting such a vague problem and calling it an intelligence test. You are right that a more vigorous mathematician would make the order of operations more clear. In conclusion, modern pemdas rules give the correct answer the to the problem, which is 9.

E -
MD This is where it gets tricky. Was it, multiply and divide at the same time from left to right, or, multiply and then divide? I believe it is the former, thus I will say 6 divided by 2 is equal to three, and then one would multiply three by the quantity calculated in P, Parentheses (3), equating to nine (9).

Sub the 2 for x.

6/x(1+2)
6/(x+2x)
6/3x
2/x

Now put the 2 from the OP back in and the answer is 2/2 = 1.

Or I have 6 bitcoins that I must divide across 2 groups each comprised of 1 neet and 2 pajeets, how many bitcoins does each person have?

Let's just assume the question mark is 'x' and multiply both sides by 2(1+2). Now we have 6=2x(1+2)
3=x(1+2)
3=3x
1=x

this just shows how parenthesis are used matters when you structure what you are trying to solve for.

the calculator reads this as the fraction 6/2 multiplied by the parenthesis; simplified to 3x3 = 9. There is no actual division done here.

The question in the OP is clearly asking 6 to be divided. If you were to punch that into your calculator it should look like

6/(2(1+2)) = 1

this is how you use parenthesis to keep your order of operations correct

Notation is not subjective. Lmao. How do you think laws in physics exist.. how would universities around the world collaborate and teach?
BEDMAS/pedmas isn't a middle school meme, it just falls to the back of your brain in higher level courses because it's supposed to come naturally after you learn it. Clearly it doesn't for you.

It's okay to be wrong my friend. Rules don't apply to every scenario, this particular problem has been proven to be the case by people much smarter than you or your high school maths teacher.

The brackets only have priority when addition and subtractions are part of the equation, not when it's multiplications and divisions. Just because the X(multiply sign) is not explicitly expressed, does not mean it doesn't exist or suddenly has a different function.

6 divided by 2 multiplied by (1+2) = 6 / 2 x 3 = 9. If you want to not be autistic and reach "the correct answer" of 1, you type 6 / (2(1+2) = 1. You are literally proven wrong by calculators and computers. If you were to type the equation as is and you wanted the answer to be 1, you'd be wrong.

>> No.9082415

>>9082343
Again, you are confusing the underlying mathematics with the human representation. It is entirely possible to create ambiguous notation, just define the same thing to mean two things. Lots of things are left implicit at high levels, since writing out all the notation becomes tiresome except in very formal papers. But you have to always be careful not to create an ambiguity, which is what the question does. ÷ originated as a shorthand for writing numbers one above another, like ½. This works fine when you have two terms, and is ambigious when there are more. It's just sloppy, and in this case, deliberate bait.

Please use your fucking brain. If you were to write a piece of code, you have to be very fucking specific with defining the orders of your functions. This is the kind of autism that has hundred million $$$ rockets blow up in the sky.

If you don't want there to be any confusion, you add all the necessary parenthesis to eliminate any possible errors. Not just hope that the computer can figure out what you wanted the answer to be.

The notation 2(1+2) is a TRAP.
It makes you think you have to multiply it first before the division (like a normal coefficient).

But it's not proper notation, since there is no unknown variable like "x", so "2" doesn't count as a coefficient ala "2x".

If you throw it into Wolfram-Alpha, it interprets the entire thing as:
6 (1+2)
--
2
