>Why did you make this decision?
I chose it completely on my own. I went to a 90% minority high school completely staffed by 25-30y/o teach for america graduates who had no real life experience to offer other than "go to college, you'll have a blast"
Trying to shovel every student into college. Seniors who "don't read too good" just blindly accepted wherever they want. Fuck that.
I've never wanted to work in an office, I wanted to work on actual things.
>Are you happy with your life?
Yeah, right now I'm happier than I've ever been.
>If you have a job, would you consider manual labor to be frequent?
Precision manual labor is my job for the most part. Test driving a car after a job is always relaxing.
>Do you feel at all that you would have been "better off" if you went to university?
Financially? No. I'd have debt out the ass, no real experience, no drive. Eemotionally? Same thing.
>What would you do differently if you had the chance?
Maybe go to a tech school of some sort, get a head start on diesel trucks or something. Heavy diesel pays a lot more than cars.

6/k a year 3 years in loans. (britbong).

I found it to be a bunch of horseshit, lost all motivation in the 2nd and 3rd year and subsequently failed my 3rd year.

I could always come back to finish it, but it's not in my WILL.

Worth it? Only for the lessons learned outside of the classroom. The entire degree was a pure shit talk on concepts that had no bearing on reality.

If I had the chance to do things differently, i.e. enter that point in time with the knowledge I have now, I would have either grinded hard despite my dislike for the system of "learning", or simply not gone altogether.
_____

Why did I make the decision to go to university? I was 18 at the time. A young, inexperienced shithead who did what those in authority (parents, teachers), told him to do.

I'm happier now than I was in my 3rd year of university.

My advice to you young ones:

Life is anarchy. You must realise the true freedom you possess, you can kiss or kill in a moment's notice.

Figure out what you want to make of this grand life, and work... WORK... PUT EFFORT, STRUGGLE, towards it.

Dont' fuck around in a social science degree. Ask yourself whether you even need a degree in order to obtain the knowledge you desire.

Good luck to all anons.

The price is much too high, but it was required for the career I originally intended on. I've since changed prospects, but the degree is still useful. It'll help me in getting promoted.

Not much since I went back to school and was more mature than the 18 year olds there.

They should take it seriously and do the work. Not just to get the grade but to learn it, because you'll use it.

For important topics I'd read extra books not assigned in class. Then I'd take all the theory from class and bring it to engineering concreteness by writing programs which were not assigned in class.

Basically, I went above and beyond. Some kids do the minimum effort, for the minimum passing grade to get the Bachelors. Sometimes they even drop the CS major since its "too hard". You might as well drop out of school if that's your attitude.

Most of these posts tend to deal with the human capital side, which I honestly dont' believe is even that significant.

The benefit of college is literally the fact that you have a piece of paper that says "I did this." It's all about signalling. It doesnt' guarantee you a good job just like not going to college doesnt' guarantee you a bad one, but it does significantly increase the likelihood of you getting a good career.

>> No.907776

>>907161
Look at a list of majors in terms of how much money they make. Isolate the top 10% and pick which one is most interesting you. If none are interesting, expand to 20%. keep doing this until you have found 3 or so majors that are interesting to you and then pick one at random or think about it hard.

Worry about career later. Just study something that you enjoy and gives you plenty of options in the future.

>Why did you make this decision?
I didn't enjoy school much. Generic education isn't for me and I had no true goals in mind regarding work. I also noticed most college grads didn't need their piece of paper once in the world.
>Are you happy with your life?
Generally yes, although I'd like to move somewhere else which would increase my expenses and leave less to save without working full-time.
>If you have a job, would you consider manual labor to be frequent?
Yes. I can't tolerate office work.
>Do you feel at all that you would have been "better off" if you went to university?
Probably not. Graduating high school in 08 had less opportunity in the working world but going to college with everyone else, having no idea what I'd like to do then graduating in 2012 with debt would have been much worse. I also think removing yourself from the everyday grind for 6 months-1year is worth it after school. At least give time to think about the next big endeavor in life. Everything until adulthood is planned and handed to you.
>What would you do differently if you had the chance?
Start working early...it's so important. Getting a car, working close or having good public transport will help so much in this. It doesn't matter what you do, find someplace that hires under-18 year olds and if you work from 16-22, it'll put you miles ahead of the kids who study hard in high school and college. Had I worked straight through 2006-12 I'd probably own several properties or at least 1 with other investments.

Essentially: Work early to discover what you actually enjoy, finding out you dislike office work after paying for a white collar degree is the worst investment ever. Real-world experience and understanding basic workplace dynamics are probably the most underrated assets for young adults today.

Economics B.A.

>How much does/did it cost you?
Around $5000 for community college.
Got $6000 to transfer with a community college degree to state university and only spent $10,000 to get my degree. So college cost me like $9,000 total plus a lot of time. Pretty good in my opinion and I graduated with no debt.

>Do you think it was worth it and why?
Worth it, maybe. Economics is an "into the trash" degree without a Masters. I think it sounds better than it is. Example:
>Number 1 issue for 2012 elections was "muh economy"
People don't even know what "the economy" is let alone understand it. This is why economics sounds good to normies but bad to anyone with an actual business or finance background. I like economics though, especially economic thought personally. But, to make money I would focus on stats and math for economics instead of, "Adam Smith, in 1776, said X, Y, Z."

I've had a few good gigs but I'm only 23, so for long term idk how well this will go for me. I want to go for a Masters in economics though.

>What would you do differently if you had the chance?
I would have gotten an Economics B.S because that program teaches you basic finance, econometrics, accounting, and a few other useful things to put in your tool kit. My Economics B.A was pretty much me reading Veblin, Smith, Ricardo, looking at other people's statistics and interpreting them, much more theory and school of thought studies. No real practical application outside of a few classes here and there.

But, what I really should have done was study Geology and I think I would have been much happier and would be in decent demand for energy markets and oil in the US. I'm not to sure about this though because I don't really keep up with it anymore but that's my Christmas land. I would love to work for the USGS. Economic geology would be a nice field to get in but my geology skills are bad.

B.S. Information Systems
>>How much does/did it cost you?
I've got ~$43,000 of federal loans to pay starting in december...luckily I somehow didn't need any private loans thanks to scholarships

>>Do you think it was worth it and why?
Hell no. If you can go to college for free, it's worth the crazy time you can have on campus with people only your own age, but as a future outlook, don't do it unless you're going towards a STEM degree. Everything else is pointless.

>>What would you do differently if you had the chance?
Study a STEM degree my freshman year so I had time to complete it in 4 years. What I'm going now is looking into some trade opportunities or apprenticeships, something that might actually interest me, because Information Technology is such a shitty field to be in and I want no part of that - I may end up enlisting in the Air Force if all else fails.

Finding yourself sucks. I wouldn't have grey hairs already if I knew what I wanted to do earlier in life. Oy vey.
