is a degree in accounting worth it? I'm finishing up in a community and transferring to a uni. I did business admin at the comm but I honestly have no idea what road to go down now that I'm going to uni.

>> No.903787

It's a meme degree.

I don't know, I was interested in project management field. I want to run shit, but I also want a job that will let me live comfortably and enjoy time. Accounting seems to be a big money maker and its a numbers game essentially. I want to make money, but I also want to work for it.

Is this shit really a meme?

I was going to do either this or computer science but accounting seems a lot easier and chiller.

Study something you want to do that can also make money. When studying gets tiresome it'll be easier if you actually enjoy your subject. Do you like accounting? Does it sound interesting to you?

project management isn't really a field. it's something you graduate into with a senior position.

A lot of engineering degrees have courses in project management (CS being one of them generally)

Once you have enough industry experience and you have proven that you can supervise small teams you will eventually move into project management.

Of course, YMMV, because not all companies roll like that.

Is it really that bad?

What if I focus really hard and transfer to a tier one school after?

I want to do freelance programming so I have more freedom and fun but not as fulltime job. So would accounting cuck me?

>> No.904572

no.
to get any decent money in the field you have to get a high gpa (3.3+) and work accounting jobs/internships during school. then after that, you're limited by how much you can get paid if you don't have a cpa, the exams cost $1500+ and you need an extra year of school to even sit for the exam.
on top of that if you do get a job at the big4 or other bigtime accounting firm, they will work you like a mule for only 55k-60k starting.
i'm in an accounting master's program and i'm looking to get into a trade after i finish or drop out.

Would that be worth it if you're just going to community college? My parents are giving me like $16k for school so if I work while in community college I'll be in pretty good shape and then if I get accounting job I'll be alright to fund my business ideas and then quit accounting all together if need be.

>> No.904594

>>904320
It's not always about the major, it's about the person (but yes some majors are definitely NOT worth it). Decently accurate descriptions tho tbf.

imo it really depends on how much debt you are going into for whatever degree, and you need a plan for post-grad. Like, immediate plan.

>>903784
Accounting is worth it if you're down for it. One of my best friends still has a year of school left but did an internship this past summer and has a job offer for when he graduates at 62k starting

I'm going to try and get a CIS degree at a state college after I'm done at CC. What's the difference between IT and CIS? I want to be some code monkey who does low skilled programming for on okay/above-average salary that let's me live a comfortable life. Should I go for IT instead of CIS?

? Programming is an action, CS is an area of study.

Programming would be the real life application of things you may have learned in CS. It doesn't touch on learning algorithms, data structures and shit tho

Currently Business admin at a community college, taking a MIS course and loving it.

I know with a BBA you can go on a dual business law/mba program

For what it's worth, I got an accounting degree and got a job outside of the accounting field.

It is nice as it's not extremely restrictive, opposed to if you pick a more focused major... a mechanic, dentist, welder, ect.

If you don't like what you are studying it's not going to end well. You can tell in fuckin seconds if you like account or programming for example. If you dont like them, it's never going to work if you try to force you into it.
